ELX is a new Linux desktop distribution aimed to attract Windows users. (We previously mentioned it about three weeks ago.) ELX 1.0 Pre 1 is now available for download on two binary CD images via FTP or HTTP. There are also 20 screenshots to entice, mostly of configuration tools and apps under the default KDE desktop.

Looks like a company trying to pass of something they didn’t write to ignorant users, with a few windows-like 30-line apps… whatever…
Linux is good because it doesn’t copy windows. Copying windows is a backward step.
It should be called Winux. Like Lindows…
“Would you wike a widdle Winux? You’ll WUV it!”
Its WOW (not LOL) 😉
Actually, ELX is a pretty decent effort. I went over to their website and if I judge from the forum, people are quite happy with it, even for a -pre1 version. They are targetting the desktop and I have to say that their effort is indeed pretty decent.
I like their support guy in the forum. He knows his stuff. And he truly ‘listens’.
The ELX distro comes from India, and we should not forget that India has made some huge steps in the IT the last 5 years. ELX really shows these advancements and it looks like a solid product with clear and well defined goals. I am impressed by the company & the product so far.
errr past 5 years ?
I think a lot of people here are giving these types of Linux distos (that are trying to play nice with Windows users… trying to play nice with LANs with all Windows machines on them, etc) too hard of a time.
This is not a bad thing. This is a good thing. Alot of places (currently) only use Windows computers. And if you could present these organizations with a Linux that was just like their Windows, and would instantly integrate with all the other computers and devices they had (on their network), it would make adoption of Linux more likely.
I know that I’ve posted on this before, but I think that
it really needs to be resaid…I would agree that we tend
to be a little harsh on any Linux distro that attempts to
emulate the look and feel of the Windows Os–but please
consider the crap that is often passed to us and declared
“the BEST Windows EVER!!!!!!” Usually when we care to
investigate we find that whatever project that happens to
be in discussion is simply the same old KDE with a few icon
changes and (perhaps if we’re particularly lucky) a few
updates to the way WinE behaves. Windows users who are suckered
(and yes I MEAN to say SUCKERED) into giving these distros a
chance find quite to their surprise that this K desktop thing
doesn’t behave or (realistically) look _anything_ like their
familiar and comfortable windows! They find that none of the
programs they expect are where they’d expect them to be, that
what programs they do recognize are quite what they’re used to
and all too often that WinE is not really preconfigured to run
_These_ are the types of distros that I think most of us tend to
be harsh towards and even become more and more hostile towards–
not because of any idealogical issues, but simply because bad
experiences such as the one I listed above do nothing but hurt
the open source community and in fact ROB us of people who could
become users! There are WindowManagers out there that are MUCH
more simuliar to the default Micro$oft setup that most users are
comfortable to, QVWM (http://www.qvwm.org/) is just one of them.
It is however to my untrained eye the most compatible in terms
of ease of use to anyone “trained” in the Micro$oft way of things.
It continues to puzzle me that out of the many many desktops\WM
I see on the multitude of distros all promising a better “Windows
than Windows” no one has (AFAIK) attempted to use QVWM–it’s almost
always the same old KDE interface…sigh..I’m not a programmer, so
I can’t just get the sources together and build a QVWM distro myself;
if I were then trust me I’d certainly be working day and night to
compile the various Linux base apps to work with QVWM and make myself
rich overnight by selling it!
I can’t believe that this elx gnu/linux distro is being posted on this site. what a waste of site space. this is such a stupid distro of gnu/linux. all it looks like is kde with modifide icons which resembles ms-windows icons.
This distro is a sad rip off to get people that are interested in linux to buy this piece of crap. this is just as bad as “lindows”, “corel”, and “redmond”. the only thing i look forward to this distro is that _maybe_ they’ll add something to WinE.
If you give a fool a diamond he will throw it. People like trakal etc who have no clue of what they say but seem to think they are some kind of major tech commentators need to have their heads examined seriously. ELX IS THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE EFFORT DONE IN LINUX. Windows like familiarity and ease of use are just by the way. It has seriously advanced development environment , is extremely stable and is the only serious competitor to windows . Which is why some microsoft implanted idiots like trakal act as idiot as windows in calling linux futureless.
