Xandros, inheritor of the software from Corel’s ill-fated foray into the desktop Linux market, has named a new chief executive and plans to release a new version of its product in late November. Xandros founder and former CEO Mike Bego remains a full-time employee, but Xandros wanted a leader with more business experience. Meanwhile, Xandros 2.0 is expected in the coming months.
Xandros seems like a wonderful distrobution, I can twait for the 2.0 release. Signed up for beta testing too, but dont know if i was selected
I cannot fathom paying for a distribution of Linux. I have, however, contributed small amounts to opensource efforts, namely Linux-NTFS. Commercial linux ventures which focus on the home user invariably end in failure, as Mandrake nearly found out. Only Redhat, who has just recently severed all commercial ties to the home user, seems to be a profiting venture. Why does Xandros think they have something special?
Hi, If you havent received any reply from them by now you are most probably one of the lucky people to betatest it. I am under a NDA so I can’t say more than it rocks!
The last Xandros was based on outdated technology. How about this version 2? Which KDE does it use?
How well does it work on low-end systems?
XandrOS2 is using the most recent version of KDE, so this will be something else than XandrOS1 for sure!
Depends on what you mean about low-end systems. My system is a Celeron 650MHz with 4MB graphics memory (laptop) (I consider that old and slow…) but it runs quite smooth!
But was discouraged by the lack of news from or about them recently. I hope they have upgraded to a newer version of KDE, and included something better/more modern than X CD Roast…
P.S.- Greetings to OK, and never move to the midsouth….
The feature list did say they’ll use at least KDE 3.11, but I’m wondering if they’ll still keep using woody debian… since it’s not the most frequently updated version of debian…
If they don’t release this by December, they’ll be using an outdated KDE (again), since KDE 3.2 is coming out then.
But this doesn’t matter as much as some people think it does ;P
I beta tested version 1 and Xandros has two things special: Stability (thus Debian) in ALL applications and the Xandros File Manager (XFM).
I complained early on about the ugly widget’s etc…and lack of KDE 3, but I’m betting they have updated things nicely. Out of the box, it’s the easiest desktop distro to deploy in multi-platform networks.
Just a few points…
1) Xandros is not meant to be a “bleeding edge” distro. If that’s all you care about, use cooker and keep our comments to yourself as they’re pointless.
2) Xandros includes the Codeweaver’s Crossover products, which makes it worth paying for, if you need that stuff.
3) Xandros developers are VERY active in building X2. There’s things in there that will blow your mind!
Yes, I’m a beta tester. No, I can’t tell you specifics, but it will be more current than some some other big distros. Again, the developers and testers are VERY active. Actually, it’s quite amazing.
Personally, I have no problems paying for a distro that packages things up so well, includes some prop apps like crossover, has a great community and excellent support.
I also use Gentoo and Slackware, so I’m perfectly able to build my own distro or tweak till the cows come home….butwhen a company packages something as special as linux up in such a professional package…..now that’s worth something and should be encouraged.
Just wait….I really wish I could tell you the coolest part of it all…but I can’t. Needless to say, their new release will turn some serious heads!
…it still isn’t made to resemble Win95 I might give it a try.
c’mon…that’s the silliest thing I’ve ever heard.
how many themes are available for linux? lots eh? yup.
how many people actually leave their OS looking like it did right out of the box? also, people have different tastes, which is all good in linux, again becuase of all the various things you can tweak.
Well I must say that Xandros 2 will just be the best Desktop Operating System ever!
if it does, I will dump Windows on my laptop. I had Debian running on it, but I go t sick of the maintenance. Xandros is certainly the OS for m laptop if I can get sound to work out of the box…otherwise, I will have to wait until Suse gets a a 2.6 kernel version out.
I thought Xandros 1 was one of the better distros that I tried (about 8-9 of them). My favorite part about it was the Xandros File Manager. Not because it resembled Explorer so much, but because I found it much more responsive than either Conkerer or Bloatilus.
If v2 can run all the latest apps and doesn’t casterate the desktop too much, it may be a winner.
please…xandros cleary tried (or tries, we will see) to make an interface that closesly resembles windows, more specifically win95 from the lame screenshot on their site and other reviews I have read.
but like I said I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on the next release.
Have fun debating!

How can you put open source software (read GPL’d) under an NDA? If I was a beta tester, wouldn’t the GPL allow me to demand the source and then do whatever I wanted with it?
/g
Nice trick to get the page hit count up on Distrowatch. You are so transparent.

Xandros does, and will rock. I have spent a long time looking for a Linux distro that is complete and Xandros is it. Yes if you want you can buy Codeweavers Office and Plugin and run windows apps on any Linux distro but thats not there best or only strength. Its just a very nice bonus. It’s in the details where Xandros rules. Every distro can install and run well untill you try and do somthing. Xandros just took the time to go beyond the others and make sure everything work the way it should. And of course i can’t say exactly what but just wait and see.
Well… As you call can see at distrowatch, it uses the newest stable version of KDE (3.1.4) and the newest stable Linux kernel (2.4.22), so no more complaining about not being current software!
Also worth noting…newest stable OpenOffice.org (1.1.0) and XFree86 (4.3.0)
Actually, there is nothing in the GPL prohibiting people who are using pre-release versions of software from redistributing it. The software has not been released to the General Public so the General Public License does not apply.
Nah, I found it myself. Should not be there though, if there is an NDA.
What are you talking about?

There really is the Xandros 2 package listing, he wasn’t fooling anybody.
Apart from the latest KDE, most of this you can get by pointing apt-get to testing or (if you’re brave) unstable. Which is what I’ve been doing with Xandros 1.0
But I will probably buy v2.0 anyway. There are little touches in Xandros that go beyond a collection of .debs. Example: the same wizard you use for DUN connections can also set up a PLIP connection to another computer via parallel laplink cable.
Xandros 2.0 BETA 2 installed flawlessly on my laptop last night. It detected all the hardware and correctly setup my wireless PC card. I am impressed! I have a few more desktop/laptop to test it out. If they all work on all, Windows will soon be history.
And yes, it has the latest stable KDE 3.1.4, latest stable kernel 2.4.22, etc. which is why I consider purchasing a copy when it becomes available.
Great job Xandros team !!!
>>Why does Xandros think they have something special?<<
Xandros includes crossover office. Xandros can do what free versions of Linux can not do. If you don’t need that feature, then maybe Xandros is not for you. But, certainly you can understand, that people who would like that feature will be willing to pay.
“Signed up for beta testing too, but dont know if i was selected.”
Don’t worry. I signed up for beta testing the Sun Java Desktop System, and they didn’t notify me at all. And then, suddenly, I recieved a package from Sun with the live cd in it
Don’t worry if you don’t hear anything.
I am a current user of Xandros 1.0. I signed up for beta testing but heard nothing. I presume I wasn’t selected. Let me say that, while Xandros is not for everyone, it is THE best distribution for Windows refugees and people who don’t want or need a steep learning curve when switching; hands down. Version 1.0 is already near perfect for corporate desktops. That’s not intended as a knock on any other distro. It’s just like saying that a Toyota might be the best car for you, while I prefer Hondas. I have no doubt that Xandros 2.0 will rock big-time, and has the potential to make a lot of computer users, Windows and Linux alike, look at Linux in a new light. I’m psyched, and I know I’ll be getting a copy for sure.
How do you know, are you a beta tester? If not, I don’t see how you know what can just be apt-getted.
