Interesting.
I recently tried kde3.1 and gnome 2.4, and i found gnome to be way to slow (i run fluxbox 0.9.7 normally)
(btw: FP!)
(btw: FP!)
Until you get modded down for it
Anyway, looking forward to 2.6.
that usually means a mis-configuration. It depends where you got your gnome from, who compiled it, what distro, an dhalf a million other things.
Probably the same old problem as before: GTK+.
(btw: LP!)
What the h*** is L/FP?
Last (?) and First Post I guess
It’s kind of little off point in here, but I saw a funny screenshot in the Gnome planet. Check here: http://tigert.gimp.org/files/screenshots/filesel-tig2.png

🙂
Gave Mandrake 9.2 a try today, with Gnome 2.4 as the sole DE. Man, I AM AMAZED!!! It responds to my commands just as fast as windows!!! While KDE 3.1.4 took 10 seconds to load Mozilla, in Gnome I have it in 2 seconds up and running!!! Everything works faster in Gnome! And imagine I was afraid to try and venture in the RPM-based-distros land!!! It isn’t that difficult to install new apps, just watch what dependencies it is asking for and install them before the actual application. I also installed a nice aqua theme with icons – far better than what’s on KDE-look.org. I was a KDE fan – but KDE has let us down in terms of speed…
can’t wait to see the next gnome!!!
:::PROUD TO BE LIVING IN THE BIRTHLAND OF LINUX:::
Too funny.
My love too.
Huh??? Mozilla is neither a KDE nor a GNOME app, so it should start up the same speed in either DE. I think you’ve got a configuration problem somewhere.
Yes, in general, GNOME apps will start up faster than KDE ones, but KDE apps should be faster once they are running. Maybe Mandrake 9.2 is different, I’ll have to give it a try.
Dunno what distribution you used before, try KDE on Mandrake 9.2.
Obviously a Gtk app like Mozilla will start faster in GNOME?
Other than that, I wouldn’t be surprised if Tudy started Mozilla in KDE first and then again in GNOME when it was still in memory.
LOL
By the way… Wow, it looks GREAT =)
Victor.
Where ?
>By the way… Wow, it looks GREAT =)
come back in an hour to see somethign else that also looks great.

Mozilla is not a Gtk or Qt app, it uses its onw XUL based widgets (I think).
I’ve noticed on this screenshot that the lists have no stripes (white-and-grey)… how come?
Victor.

Yeah, Eugenia has a way of drawing that sort of attention.
She’s like the crack dealer for Trolls these days.
# ldd /usr/lib/mozilla/mozilla-bin | grep gtk
libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 => /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 (0x4013e000)
Given that it contains a send a “Send love to Eugenia” checkbox i guss that the screenshot is not from the real Gnome distro.
But all the same, it looks better than the current Gnome file dialog. Let’s hope that the devopers looks at it for inspiration.
However, if they do, I think it could be improved.
The “Up” icon should move to the other side of the drop down meny. That way you wouldn’t need to move the mouse so far if you are browsing the list of files, but finnally decedes to move one level up. And one other thing shouldn’t we use the same icon for “up” as nautilus does i.e. an up arrow. (Or change to a folder with arrow in Nautilus too).
You think wrong. Mozilla is and always was using Gtk on Unix (although it could be ported to another toolkit like Qt and in fact once was). XUL is basically just another layer on top of Gtk (or any other plattform). In the latest versions, Mozilla is using plain Gtk widgets when the classic theme is selected.
@Spark
You have a link or are you just spouting off nonsense? I think the latter, please read this…..
