“According to a recent update on their website (February 14th), the reason why the source code of BlueEyedOS (which is under the LGPL licence) hasn’t been made available yet is because they can’t find a public host.” More is available here. Also interesting to check out the sourceforge status.
hmm, well, better that B.E.OS take it than let the thing rot on SF.
All of a sudden, these Be projects are looking more interesting to me – maybe it’s because of the trouble Linux is having with dependency problems, distro differences, binary compatibility, numerous graphical kit api’s.
BlueEye seems to have made a good decision to use the linux kernel as a base, and build from there. I think in a couple of years one of these Open Source BeOs’s is going to start gaining a large desktop share, because they will be “good” enough and have a stable base. Let’s see…
Well dependence hell is not intrinsic to linux (which BTW is just the damn Kernel! ), but to a lot of GNU or GNU-like software projects out there. If you end up using that software with any BeOS clone you’ll end up in the same situation. Therefore this is not a Linux only problem, and using a different OS will not get rid of the dependency hell magically.
What graphical toolkit is the project using atop of Xfree? It looks very similar to GTK+.
AFAIK, they are writing thier own, to be compatible with the Be interface kit. You can see in one of the screenshots that he was using GNOME when developing it.
so becuase BEOS is using the linux kernel does this mean it will be able to run all of linux apps ?? also will it be able to use linux drivers ??? in essence be anothre Linux Distro but where each app is chosen by the developer to have in the distro ??
or is there another goal ??

Did you check in the FAQ in BlueEyedOS’s website? It has answered a lot of questions.
i read a bit of the FAQ all i can say is woooooohoooo if they do it !!
i can run all, linux apps and use my hardware which is supported by linux
the only thing is why dont they use kernel 2.6 ??
another question will the linux have to be compiled ??

Because, this project was created way before Linux 2.6 released. I am pretty sure that they will follow up with the Linux current version when it’s ready.

What do you mean?
BlueEyedOS’s goal is to have the very easy install framework as far I have read in the forum, so I guess they want the binary install. But, you or someone have to recompile any BeOS app to make it works with BlueEyedOS thought.
Why not put the project on Berlios.de, both blueos and blueeyedos are still free. I found their service to be more reliable too.
It is a shame there doesn’t seem to be much of a community behind it. This looks really, really cool and really, really good. I hope they find some decent hosting soon and hopefully attract some more developers.
Yes, I can second that. I have a sourceforge project running and they are at least once a week down for some hours. I did not get any notifications. Impossible to bring my CVS up to them.

I like this OS, two years ago I have tried BeOS PE 5.0,
but now I upgrade my hardwares, and I hope can use a real BeOS, for Zeta is not an OpenSource OS, and OpenBeOS can’t be used now, so I hope I can get this to run on my box ASAP

Yeah I think they made the right choices to avoid driver issues and going LGPL, I think people are just staying away because of the silly name.
To me, the obvious place for hosting BlueEyedOS would be beunited.org. They host open source BeOS projects, don’t they? Any reasons why this has not been considered?
Am I missing something here?
