One could say this: “It was developed because QT wasn’t free software. Now that it is GPL, GNOME is obsolete and should be abandoned.”
However, I hope they have finally not only focussed on usability (in the sense of HIG) but also on usability (that applications actually work). Gnome 2.4 felt really clean and simple, and for example File Roller feels much less a command-line frontend than Ark, but other applications were too buggy to be useful (like the sound recorder)
Have they embedded Nautilus in the file selector yet, so that it supports smb and ftp and such?
Actually, they wouldn’t embed nautilus in the file chooser, but they have developed a way for gnome-vfs to be accessible through the file chooser, which will enable the functionality you refer to.
” Now what’s with the numbering scheme? Are they paralleling
the kernel versions? ”
No, they just use the same versioning convention and they move through versions much quicker than linux. Gnome started long after Linux, so they have finally caught up on version number.
Better in that the unwanted jokes, trolls and antagonistic posts are getting modded down. Worse in that they seem to be increasing anyway. I’d like a forum where I don’t have to wade in useless chatter. If you want to crack a joke, go to some comedy forum or Slashdot.
Getting back on thread, the stable release of Gtk2 2.4.0 is out on Fedora development (former rawhide) and the latest Gnome2 packages are coming out.
thanks for the garnome suggestion even though it wasn’t directed at me directly – just noticed mono is included with it – that’s a nice addition! would be awesome if (when it’s released) it gets included in all the big & smaller distros…
Why is Beavis moderated down? He was just referring to the name of this release. It’s not even off topic really.
On topic its great to see thing finally getting up to speed after some difficulties earlier. I’m definately going to install 2.6 on my freebsd when the final hits and at this pace it should come without significant delays !
Gnome is a far more superior DE. Not only its usability/fuctionality but also (especially) the underlining framework.
I use both gnome 2.4 (Laptop, BSD, older machines) and KDE 3.1/3.2/3.2.1 (Development machines), and I find it hard to understand the source of your statement. One can only wonder if you ever tried 3.2/3.2.1 before making this blanket statement?
Plus, I’m not sure the usage statistics of KDE vs. Gnome will support your “most people” statement.
First, it’s not wise to feed the trolls. I mean, it’s quite obvious that he is one, no? Second, popularity don’t mean shit. Most people will agree that MacOSX is an excellent platform to use/develop for, yet only about 2 or 3% of the computing world is using it. Many people believe that the entire MS Windows framework is just a pile of rotting horse manure, yet it’s the most used…
Gnome is not _ONLY_ for linux OS!
It has to change to gnome_1_6_2 for NetBSD or
5_2_1 for FreeBSD or anything else?
dave
gnome was developed starting on linux…
I think he means that they use the same numbering scheme — X.Y.Z, where Y is even for stable releases, and odd for development releases.

Just a coincidence .

johngalt is pretty damn funny
I can’t wait to try out Fedora Core 2 to get this gnome.
Gnome is a far more superior DE. Not only its usability/fuctionality but also (especially) the underlining framework.
Too bad I’ll try it after fedora its released, normal people like me can’t compile it. =(-
go and greb garnome, it will d/l and compile your new gnome automagically!
you don’t have to wait you know

Anyone know of an unofficial source where the debs will be available from? I want a Debian repository asap
Where can one get Gargnome? I tried to google it to no avail..
It’s Garnome, not Gargnome.
http://www.gnome.org/~jdub/garnome/

Point taken… on both counts.
