So, I’m a little confused by this. If I remember correctly Microsoft’s original handheld OS was called WindowsCE, and at some point in time they renamed it to PocketPC, Which I thought it was still called. But, the article talks about WindowsCE being the core embedded realtime OS and windows mobile being CE + some stuff layered on top to make a handheld OS, but it doesn’t mention PocketPC. Did i miss another name change? and can anyone explain the genealogy of WinCE, PocketPC, WindowsMobile to me?
I believe that the core OS is called Windows CE. PocketPC is a specific version for a standardized hardware (ARM, 320×200 screen, etc) platform. There are other branches as well, such as Handheld PC 2000. The Windows Mobile brand covers Windows CE and all of its branches.
