According to BeGroovy, “With the start of WalterCon 2004 comes the new name for OBOS, Haiku. Too late for complaining, the t-shirts have been made.” In related news, the BeUnited JAVA port was demonstrated and will be released soon. Also see coverage on IsComputerOn.
Fantastic choice for a name! 🙂
Good luck to HaikuOS
How long does it take to load the sound driver? Even for the generic, internal speaker? A second or two? I figure you could have everything load up *before* the splashscreen, like most Unix-type OS’s do… spewing out all that verbose technical data. Or just a progress bar with what’s being loaded at the moment. BeOS loads up and inits everything quickly… always has. About 10-15 sec. right?
I gotta find a free paint program for MacOS X… I just don’t know how to draw anything in Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0.
I also need to get a free MIDI app (I love iPiano, but don’t have the money right now to register it… nay, even $20! So when it’s 30 day trialtime expires, none of my MIDIs can be played (unless I export them as generic MIDIs)), so I can see about composing a couple little tunes and see what everyone thinks…

It should have been called AXEL coz he contributes most of the code but hey I love HAIKU. It’s just brilliant.
– It’s non technical, short, pronouncable, mysterious name.
– It refers to the brilliant Haiku errormessages in netpositive
– Haiku’s are simple and yet also complex poems, BeOS has that feeling too.
– It’s Japanese, I love Japanese names, they make good brandnames: Toyota, Sony, Honda…etc
In one word brilliant !
I love Japanese names, they make good brandnames: Toyota, Sony, Honda…etc
Sony fo sure isn’t a japanese name. They wanted to create a short and catchy “international” brand name. And that’s just what they did
Honda and Toyo(d)a are the founders’ family name, much like Ford.
<em>why not kontiki? or mikado? or harakiri?</em>
You forgot an obvious one: Kamikaze
