What is FreeSBIE? Simply: It’s a live system on compact disk (CD), or an operating system that is able to load directly from a bootable CD, without any installation process, without any hard disk. It’s based on the FreeBSD operating system. Here’s how to build a cluster using it.
Is it just me or is it getting to the point where you can cluster most services on cheap hardware and have the same uptime as a top of the line Dell Server?
I just switched to Devil Linux for use as a Firewall / Router and saved a heck of a lot of money.
An interesting point from the article “The CD’s lifecycle is much longer. It normally works only for read operations, was designed as a better storage alternative, and, worth mentioning, the cost of one blank compact disk is hundred times less than the cost of a hard disk drive.”
This article just reminded me that I can remove the HDD from the DevilLinux box. Woohoo.
Top of the line Dell Server? Well first off, I personally don’t think dell’s servers are that great, but secondly I believe we have been at this point for quite some time.
every time i read osnews this article as less comments…
Always glad to read about new ways to use FreeBSD.
This article was quite informative but not because of its intended purpose. I found out a lot about FreeSBIE and its easy build process. So now I’m going to build a portable development environment that I can use when doing web development within different companies. A live CD with my selected apps combined with a USB drive for storage is a great way to have a portable and nigh on indestructible “workstation”. It’s lighter than a laptop and much less prone to theft.
FreeSBIE, really a very nice one. everyone should try it !!!
