With Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Microsoft is introducing a set of security technologies that will help improve Windows XP-based computers’ ability to withstand malicious attacks from viruses and worms. These technologies include: Network protection, Memory protection, improved email security, safer browsing.
of all these security improvements on my day to day desktop
usage. Norton Antivirus slowed my system down so much I was forced to dump it in favor of AntiVir – an excellent piece of work, IMO.
But, since discovering CrossOver Office v3, I spend far less time in Windows. So, far there are only 2 apps I can get working for which I have yet to find a suitable replacement.
And, before anyone asks, no I don’t play many Windows games.
Hi,
I think that if microsoft got things right the first time and held back Xp for another 6-12 months and waited to release Windows 2003 Server and Xp Pro/Home at the same time, I would hope to believe that most of these “security” holes would have solved.
After all anyone who has installed 2003 server can say that security was a focus. I also know that there is a service pack coming out for 2003 server that fixes some bugs found, but I’m sure if the security base from 2003 server was there in the beginning a lot of them trojan/virus’ could not have spread so quickly.
I for one hope that MS has learned from their mistakes and that dispite the monoploy outlook of MS they batten down their hatches and stick to a secure plan.
Also note, that Most of the security features that are updated in Xp Pro / Home don’t really take affect untell you have a 64 Bit chip to take advantage of this.
But I was kinda scared to find out that MS has told some corporate users to *NOT* upgrade. IBM was one of them.

MS have not told corporate customers not to upgrade. They’ve told them to plan carefully for it.
IBM told their users not to install SP2 yet off their own bat. Hopefully it’s because IBM are planning and testing and will be ready soon.
It is an important upgrade for corporates and they should be planning and testing for deployment as soon as possible.
MS have given a tool to corporate and business customers that will delay SP2 via automatic updates for a few months. But if they haven’t deployed it (or SUS) by Q4 they’re in for a wonderful automatic updates surprise
In your excitement to be the first to post you forgot to comment on SP2.
Please, Micro$haft, when is SP3 coming? Gimme, gimme…

Not at all. Personally, I don’t see the benefit. All those new
features will probably have a significant negative performance
impact on my aging laptop and stated in my so-called “hurried”
post, I don’t need to use XP much lately.
In fact,in the last little while,I haven’t needed to be connected to the ‘net when using XP – a pretty safe scenario.
they will provide “bullshit protection” and self-destruct.
they’ve changed the way the networking
has worked for the sole purpose of *covering
up* bugs in other parts of their OS and
MS applications (namely, bugs that allow
IP scanning worms to flourish in the MS environment.)
it must be great to be able to change the way
the internet works, just because you can’t be bothered
to spend the time and money to fix your applications.
application that need the internet to work the
way it does now will need more than “tweaking”.
and there is no way to turn off their non-standard
garbage.
IBM is movexploring linux as a new standard for them, as is China (yes the country)and Europe. A wise choise, with all the problems that ALL Window’s OS’s have had, i’d say UNIX, LINUX, or MAC OS X are much better choices.
