Here’s an article titled ‘Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: Developer Overview’. It builds on the information presented on the Mac OS X Tiger Sneak Preview Site on apple.com and adds information that will be of interest to developers. Elsewhere, AppleInsider has new juicy details based on newer builds of Tiger.
Looks cool go APPLE!
I wish Apple would leave the pin stripes on the system menu. I like is just how it is now in panther as opposed to this new glassy look.
I LOVE the new Platinum theme and hope that the OS X engineers decide to push this theme across the board. This looks like it will solve the Panther Metal takeover of Aqua obsession the engineers and HIG team fell into last year.
The Glassy menu’s also seem to reflect the lighter more 3D blue across the board as well.
Every OS release has seen a dramatic change in the UI, it’s how the marketing guys can distinquish between releases and it’s a great selling point. (you can just look at someone’s desktop and know right away what release they are using without even asking)
Looks like they’re finally going to give you an option to display something other than the user name in the menu bar for fast user switching.
Apple has modified the install to detect for PearPC. Therefore resulting in an install that runs even slower than it normally would.
Users of PearPC say, “I’ve just given up” I might just an old iMac since it runs it faster.
:B
How long will it take OSX users to get sick of a weather applet that takes up half of the screen?
How many more themes can Apple put on one desktop?
Does anyone even remember HIG?
Oh, I forgot, Apple is beyond reproach. What was I thinking?
P.S. Apple start learning Gecko, your KHTML code is on borrowed time, so sayeth the Akademics.
“How long will it take OSX users to get sick of a weather applet that takes up half of the screen”
About as long as the split second it takes to toggle the widgets offscreen with whatever assigned key. They don’t stay up there full time, that’s kinda the whole point.
These version numbers are moving slower than the Linux kernel.
looks like fullscreen is still available only in pro version
remote desktop like XP Pro.
Like BitTorrent, I can’t live without it.
… Tiger proves to be faster and more stable than Panther. All the features in Panther are good enough for me. The spotlight feature is probably the only one that I would ever use. All the other ones seem like overkill for me. It’s great that apple keep on pushing the boundaries but I personally don’t need them.
The core image and core video technologies may speed the GUI up which can lag sometimes when I have a lot of apps open, especially when I have a lot of Safari tabs open.
I heard that Apple are gonna release Java 5 (or whatever it’s called) with Tiger. Does this mean that won’t be available for Panther users? I’d have to upgrade then since I primarily develop with Java.
Apple do tend to release java for the ‘older’ versions too, i wouldnt worry
and with reguards to khtml since apple joined the team it has come on in leaps and bounds. I am suprised there isnt a mainsteam browser for windows based on it (if there is please inform me)

You haven’t been following OSNews very closely, have you? Just yesterday there was an article about it: http://www.osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=8597
Oh, I forgot, Apple-bashers are beyond reproach. What was I thinking?

OK, what exaclty is the Platinum theme? All I can see is a grey gradient where a metal background used to be. It’s not exactly pretty, but it might be workable.
But the problem is that the Mail window using this theme looks butt ugly. It’s as blocky as can be. This thing looks like the GUIs Swing retards generate for their java apps. It’s not the theme, as much, as the placement of the widgets (and the huge blocky bar on the left, as well as the huge blocky toolbar).
Removing the drawer may be a step in the right direction, but for christ’s sake, fix this ugly mess.
<iI heard that Apple are gonna release Java 5 (or whatever it’s called) with Tiger. Does this mean that won’t be available for Panther users?[/i]
Probably, though a sure hope it does not. Apple should still provide support for its old OS version, or have very cheap upgrade options (like $30)!
I’d have to upgrade then since I primarily develop with Java.
Why is that? If you do professional development, you don’t need it. After a couple of years, yes, but for now, what’s the point? Most enterprises still deploy 1.3 and reluctunly go to 1.4.x at the moment. It’s not as if everyone goes to work with new Java 5 features that a) are untested in real life deployments, b) not many people have installed.
Only mavericks will go to Java 5 before Java 1.5.1 is released, and for most people it will take even more time.
But the problem is that the Mail window using this theme looks butt ugly.
You know the saying, you can please all the people, some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but never all the people all the time.
Amazing how people’s opinions of design can differ so greatly. I personally LOVE the way the theme looks with mail, and welcome it much more so than the original and definitely in place of some sort of brushed metal them.
Take a look into the developer preview program. For $500.00 today, you’ll get the “Select Developer” status for 1 year. This includes bata replease and gold releases during the year. They also give you a discount on 1 system purchase.
I just looked and you can get the Dual 2.0GHz model for $2000.00. So for the same price as the standard model, you can get bata Tiger today with a new system and the final release of Tiger when it comes out next year.
from looking at the first document the most interesting bit, which I had not hear of before, was Core Data. Particually using SQLite, any program can have it’s data in it’s own Relational Database. Not only that but any other program can open this up and then use that data for whatever it wants. A bit like Jet but without Access.
I wish there was more in this… I am not quite sure I understand what they will be storing. Object state? Is it just a persistence model? :/

“These version numbers are moving slower than the linux kernel”
Um, the linux kernel is updated constantly in small increments. Version 10.4 is a huge major update to the entire operating system. In actually, Apple releases minor updates every couple months that in effect update OS X’s kernel.
So really, you don’t know what your talking about.
<sarcasm>
Yep, its no good if its not GPL. I don’t understand why anyone would use OSX when there are GPL alternatives like KDE and Gnome. Why pay?
</sarcasm>
Honestly, why?
“How many more themes can Apple put on one desktop?”
Currently, no where near as many as Windows and Linux.
“Oh, I forgot, Apple is beyond reproach. What was I thinking?”
Obviously, you weren’t thinking.
“Honestly, why?”
Because some of us want something other than a Windows wannabe.
You obviously never used kde.
Anyway, simply saying you like OS X and that it’s worth it’s price for you would have sufficed. ;-D
Tiger is supposed to have 150 new features compared to Panther, so that’s about 66 cents per feature. I think that’s pretty good.
And dot releases… it’s pointless to look at it that way. OSX is a brand name so they would crank it up to 10.27.3 if they wanted to. They’re not gonna move away from version 10 any time soon. It’s the contents that count. 🙂
Is Windows 2000, 1902 times better than Windows 98? 🙂
To this day, it amazed me Windows people are so stupid sometimes.
“twice a year for a DOT release”
Is it really so hard to understand that the naming conventions are different? If Apple called it OSX 2000, 2001, 2002, would that help you out? Or OS10, OS11, OS12?
It’s OSTen, and every 18 months or so there is a new version. It is distinguished by .1 or .2 or .3 in the name. I’ve got to believe anyone with an IQ over 90 can understand this very basic and simple thing.
The new version if you want it is $129. For many users, there is no NEED to upgrade. Buy it if you want.
WHY OH WHY is this SO HARD for people to understand?
Why does everyone make a big deal about the cost of updaes for OS X. I really don’t think they are that bad. About once a year I fork over the money for the update and I have no problems with that. Personally I’d rather pay a small amount knowing I am getting tons of new features and speed increases.
Why is it such a big deal that Apple actually updates its OS with new stuff? Wouldn’t you like to see that progress is being made rather have your OS stay basically the same for 4 years then get an update that has had many features stripped? For Apple to stay compepitive they need to add features and stay ahead of the game.
I’ll pay my $64 (fed emplyee discount) for Tiger and if I had to I’d happily pay $129.
For the record, GNOME is a MacOS Classic wannabe, not a Windows wannabe.
Now, to get back on topic…
I think Tiger is shaping up to be an amazing update. The new features look amazing, and Apple is clearly in the feature adding stages.
I know this means we’ll see Tiger closer to June than January, but I could care less. I am excited for OSX to take a major leap forward, and to see Apple’s innovation at work.
MS is cutting features left and right to make Longhorn launch by 2006. Apple is still piling on the features to make a 2005 launch.
I can’t imagine how M$ calls themselves an innovative company. They should give Apple 1/2 their cash to do their R&D for them.
> I wish there was more in this… I am not quite sure I understand

Look at this page at CocoaDev for more infos on Core Data:
http://www.cocoadev.com/index.pl?CoreData
I always thought Gnome was more f a mac OS X wannabe… and a very good one at that…. just need the option of putting the menu on the top tool bar rather than on each window and it will be as good as, if not better than OS X (probably as good as or almost as good as given the lack of some applications and stuff, but the interface is basically there.
i’ve said it before, i’ll say it again, most of the features of tiger don’t excite me, what excites me is the technology beneath that apple is giving developers.. we’re going to see some really exciting apps that require 10.4
Holy crap, the fonts are still NOT top-notch, to blurry!
Apple’s way too confident, do they know about (better) font-engines AT ALL ?
I guess not OR it’s forbidden by steve to critisize the wacko fonts.
“For the record, GNOME is a MacOS Classic wannabe, not a Windows wannabe.”
On what side of the Universe is that?
Oh, if you want to say that since Windows is a MacOS Classic wannabe and than Gnome, that copies Windows, is a MacOS Classic wannabe too, it’s ok.
But if you say that Gnome is itself a MacOS Classic, I don’t think so.
“and with reguards to khtml since apple joined the team it has come on in leaps and bounds. I am suprised there isnt a mainsteam browser for windows based on it (if there is please inform me)”
There is no apple code in Konqueror HTML at all. Search google/kde blogs for reasons…
“There is no apple code in Konqueror HTML at all. Search google/kde blogs for reasons…”
There is YES!!!
Read the Hyatt blog sometimes.
I’m very tired about this stupidities from Apple-blamer!
Your envy is without any limit!
