I really hope PalmOne releases an upgrade to Cobalt 6.x for the Tungsten T3. When I purchased mine my hope was that they would release it when it came out. *fingers crosseed
Hi,
Quite cool – just been playing around with it, might now consider getting a Palm.
As a sidenote, the writing speed seems a bit slow. I tried a palm once before, and I found it annoying that I it couldn’t seem to keep up with my handwriting. any suggestions from palm afficiandos?
Overall, Cobalt seems pretty easy to get up and running. No borking around like with, say QNX or Plan9 =).
Bye,
Victor
Where are the devices using it?
Why latest palm model Tungsten T5 doesn’t use it???
Why palm announces a new version of an OS no one has got running on a commercial product????
What are those rumors about using windows on the treo!???
Hi,

Dude, I believe it’s a preview/beta thing – they’re releasing the simulator to get developers used to and coding for it so that they’ll be ready for it when it releases, which I think to be a wise strategy for Palm (unlike, say *cough* Nintendo *grin*).
Why latest palm model Tungsten T5 doesn’t use it???
I assume it will be available for the T5 as a free update. Put it this way, the software/ROM for the T5 has probably been finalised for severla months, with all the QA and testing they have to do.
Why palm announces a new version of an OS no one has got running on a commercial product????
As I said before, this is a simulator for developers to test the new system. And this is probably a *smart* thing to do.
What are those rumors about using windows on the treo!???
These rumours have already been debunked – see recent posts on gizmodo and engadget.
Also, this is OT, but what’s with the multiple question marks?

The Palms (OS5) using ARM processors are much better at recognizing handwriting at a decent speed. I did find that an external keyboard helps if you have to get a lot of data into the device though. If you can get the original Graffiti installed on a newer device, it should be faster than the Graffiti 2 that’s used now.
The download seems to need a username and password.. great. Okay, so, it is for developers but.. if it doesn’t emulate the CPU your application is going to run on what’s the point? Real testing requires the environment to be as close to the end user experience as possible.. otherwise you’re just finding syntax errors.
It simulates the entire Palm environment quite well. I haven’t loaded any programs onto it yet, but graffiti 2, the core apps, and emulation of various networking methods, screen resolutions, color depths, and memory sizes are covered. I’ll have to spend a couple of hours with it soon to see how well it actually works for debugging an app 🙂
Anybody get a “Missing License File” Error?
Are the data for the corresponding Palm Desktop applications stored in the same format as the 4.0 release?
Palm OS6 is here for almost one year and T5 was expected to be first Palm OS6 device. Palm OS6 is not any beta and simulator and development tools for 6.0 are here months.
Uhm there are NO handhelds running Cobalt, so this simulator is all you’ve got. Cobalt was released in what, January 2004? And there’s still NOT ONE Cobalt device.
Palm needs a serious reality check. Go to the PDA sites on the net, people are pissed. We’re not going to go out and buy $400 Palm 5 PDA’s only to get screwed 6 months later when new Cobalt Palms come out.
And to the people who bought current Palms hoping for an upgrade, good luck. Palm has screwed us in the past this way.

Well I did not explain myself very well (apologies), I meant the OS not the emulator, Palm did announce that os 6 was ready and then 6.1… who did use v6.0? what’s the point announcing improvements on an unreleased OS?

Until it is officially announced that’s nothing but wishfull thinking.

I agree it is smart… but where are the devices to run the software later on…

Thanks god, you do not know how happy you made me!

Palm OS is always released prior to having the hardware available for it due to the way it is distributed. PalmSource creates the OS and sends it to their licensees who actually develop the hardware and usually add some proprietary features and then ship the hardware.
By PalmSource releasing the latest version with this emulator it allows developers to test their software with the latest version prior to hardware manufacturers shipping it as well as start to program for the new features available in it.
Who has licensed OS6 so far? do you have any info on that? I’m just asking I do not know the general status about OS6 so far if it is so much better than OS5 and app compatible why is that no one is using it yet??
PalmSource 2004 = Be Inc. 1996
Palm Cobalt = BeOS
Let the crashing and burning begin!
Anyone found a browser or know how to use it? I hear they were incorporating NetFront into Cobalt but I don’t see it.
Is there a way to copy files onto the simulator? I want to try out the Media Player.
“Real testing requires the environment to be as close to the end user experience as possible.. otherwise you’re just finding syntax errors.”
True, you need to run on real hardware eventually to make sure things work, however, you should be able to do the vast majority of your work in the simulator. The simulator is basically the complete OS — including the actual kernel — running inside a single Windows process. The main differences from a real device is that there is no actual memory protection (it is as if the MMU was turned off on a device) and of course the code being executed is x86 instead of ARM. For people outside of the kernel and driver groups, the vast majority of our work at PalmSource is done using the simulator.
Much as I would have loved to develop for OS6, the company I work for is more concerned about having our app work on devices that actually exist, so I’ve had to do the port for
OS 5 instead, which is pretty nasty to work with.
When OS6 devices come out, I’ll make a native ARM fork and use as many OS6 features as I can (it actually has a lot more Posix functions.. previously I had to emulate them).
Does anyone know if the new emulator still crashes if you accidentally do sprintf(buffer,”%s”,50); or something like that?

You forgot the latest addition:
PalmSource CEO = Jean Loui Gassé
This looks 110% crashing and burning all right!!!
Pity about the mis-opportunity with T5 + OS6 … major major bummer!!!
“PalmSource CEO = Jean Loui Gassé ”
Jean-Louis Gassee, is NOT CEO of PalmSource. Where in hell did you get that one?
David Nagel is CEO of PalmSource, and JLG has been appointed chairman of the board of directors of PalmSource. Again, read (if you’re able to) the relevant press releases here:
