The cluster, a collection of computers that work together, is an important concept in leveraging computing resources because of its ability to transfer workload from an overloaded system (or node) to another system in the cluster. This article explains how to set up a load-balancing Linux cluster using Knoppix-based LiveCDs.
There is also distccknoppix. I’ve used clusterknoppix in vmware to build a 12 system diskless cluster. I was disappointed by the performance ;-p
You were disappointed by the performance of a cluster you built in vmware?
Better to try a real cluster environment even with LTSP and some 486’s
Is there a torrent available for the latest version of clusterknoppix? I just went to their website and it looks like the latest torrent is from the end of 2003.
“You were disappointed by the performance of a cluster you built in vmware?”
I do think it was a joke, note the “;-p”

I wonder if he really did it though? I would go insane from the slowness even if just to watch it do it’s thing. Anyway, Happy Chriskwanhanaka everybody!!!
I suppose you could always try to get better performance out of vmware by running it on an on an Open Mosix cluster… and then hosting the clusterknoppix cluster within vmware.
too much chinese food, not enough sleep…. [;-P
i haven’t tried that yet but i did run pearpc in clusterknoppix in vmware
xicarpenoctemix: it wasn’t that bad i only had 1 system running x and the other systems were diskless that and i have a dual xeon with 2gb of ram so i was able to make a bunch of systems in vmware
Are there any good books about building clusters for newbies?
Does anyone know something similar for the *BSDs?
is that the UNIX process model is badly suited for process migration. Not all processes can migrate (e.g. ones using shared memory), and most processes end up having to forward a lot of I/O requests to the originating node, and will die if that node or the network goes down. Use OS migration instead.
I have a newb question, so go easy…
What good does a cluster of computers do for the average home user? I have a thinkpad t20 + 4 600e’s laying around. Would running these as a cluster with the t20 as my main unit help in any way for something like faster surfing, video playback or gaming? Just askin’.
