BeGeistert is a biannual meeting of BeOS users and developers held in Germany. BeOS developer and frequent OSNews writer Nicholas Blachford, wrote a review of the meeting and also reveals some news having to do with a possible come back from YellowTab and some working code presented by OpenBeOS members. Nicholas also includes a small mpeg video and many pictures of the meeting.
Nice to see BeOS T-Shirts with 2002 on them.
Looking forward to OBOS while STILL hoping that Palm will rise to the occation someday soon!

Steve Sakoman (number two guy at Be) was at Apple working on the Newton and I believe JLG was on the board at 3Com.

No BeBoxes?
Does anyone know if these are just XL sized T-shirts? I’d be interested if they had at least L. Oh yes, and if they are still available, of course.
Any idea when/if yellow tab might be released as was suggested in the article?
There should be T-shirts left, try:
[email protected]
I believe there were different sizes.
Yellowtab when? Sorry don’t know.
There is a web site:
http://www.yellowtab.com
but it’s well out of date (which means he must be working on it…)
This company’s Executives have been the biggest disappointment to the investment community in the history of software development.
They have fail without any doubt, over and over again to live up to the promises comitted to the high tech world ad also cost the investment community Million of dollars.
Nicholas forgot to mention that at Bernd’s BeOS NG Demo, he presented us a nice Hardware OpenGL support for all RadeOn GPU – based Graphic Cards (shall_work without major issues):
Software OpenGL Teapot : 40 fps (you all know that probably
Hardware OpenGL Teapot : 600 fps
Besides he played the OpenSourced SDL Quake II on a 19″ fullframe@32bit@85Hz (1280×1024) seamlessly & smoothly.
BTW there were a lot of bugfixing at the mediacodecs (DivX’s didn’t crash Mediaplayer anymore moving around the movie timeline) and Radeon driver bugfixes at BeOS NG.
I liked the review alot but….
One conversation that came up was the cost of Macs, they are generally considered overly expensive but is this really true? Firstly they are compared to bargain basement PCs when they should really be compared to Compaqs (or the like) where the price difference is smaller.
Cool, give me a $900 dollar mac please.
[i] Additionally nobody adds in the cost of the included software (iMovie, iDVD etc) or free developer tools, add the cost of purchasing tools of this grade for the PC and I don’t think there would be much – if any – price advantage left.[/]
Okay, let my buy the software later if I ever find the need for it…

Easy there. if you are talking about JLG and Be’s management then you really need to practice some restraint. They really did a good job all things considered. They were doomed from the beginning as is any other x86 OS as long as Ms is around. R
It is very easy to criticize but you, and I, were not aware of all the information. I work with VCs and startups and know tons of small companies that shut done because larger firms would not commit to anyone without 2 years funding or even to anyone that was not part of a larger firm.
The focus shift sucked but Be had plenty of VC’s and creditors involved who can call the shots. Moreover the so-call support from the Steinberg’s of the world was delayed time after time who knows when/if it would have surfaced.
Be has repeatedly said that the bootloader holds the key to the success of any OS and they are correct. With MS holding that Beos would never receive any critical mass at least not for 10 more years, and who has the funding for that?
Finally, BE’s management was honest. They saved many of their employees, tried to save the technology, and gave the investors some hope via the anti-trust suit.
Enron are crooks pure and simple. Be’s managment were victims of crooks.

Is that in BeOS NG? (I don’t speak German…)
Then again that wasn’t news to me – I’ve had HW openGL for 2 years or something like that ๐
If you have a 640*480*60Hz screen and make the window really really small it does >19,000 frames per second!!!
dude. i meant give me a 900 dollar mac that is compareable to a 900 dollar pc.
A G3 600 does not compete with a P4 1.6 ghz. Plus the graphics and moniter on the old imac are worse than they are on the pc…
Thanks Nicholas, I hope there’s still a T-shirt left for me… I sent an e-mail to the address you gave me. We’ll see.
Damn, I’ll have to get fired or something, so next year I can come, too!

I have never found a $900 PC worth buying… then again I haven’t found a PC maker to build a PC that appeals to me (except for Dell maybe).
If you are happy with a 900$ PC, why don’t you buy one ? If not there must be something better on a Mac, and then it should be clear that you have to pay more ๐

BeGeistert 009 has been announced, with a bit more warning this time:

I get a feeling of dรฉjร vu. Some of the last loyal followers of an OS, that once drew large numbers of users to the gatherings, in a cheap-to-rent building.
No, I am not beeing sarcastic, it just feels a little sad that history seems to repeat itself.
Go obos crew!
