MandrakeSoft, today announced the availability of the boxed versions of Mandrake Linux 8.2 through a number of retail outlets worldwide and also online. Mandrake Linux 8.2 for PowerPack and ProSuite are the first Linux distributions to include StarOffice 6.0, the new office suite from Sun Microsystems which is compatible with Microsoft Office documents. Customers are provided with three packaged versions of Mandrake Linux 8.2 to choose from: ProSuite ($149.99), PowerPack ($69.99) and Standard ($39.99). OEM versions, targeted at hardware manufacturers, are due out later this month. In the meantime, SuSE 8.0 also hits the retail market today. SuSE’s prices start at $39.95 for the SuSE Linux 8.0 IA32 Personal and go up to $79.95 for the SuSE Linux 8.0 IA32 Professional.
Great job SUSE and Mandrake!!!!!! I cut my teeth on Mandrake then bought the retail version (7.3) of SUSE and haven’t turned back to Windows. I reccommend anyone wanting to make the switch, buy either SUSE or Mandrake and stick with it. It might create a few bumps, but none that can’t be dealt with a little patience. (Just my .02$)
I know suse 8 comes with kde 3, but does mandrake too?
Mandrake doesn’t come with KDE 3, but like the article said the deluxe editions come with StarOffice 6. It’s a trade-off I guess. Personally I prefer SuSE, but mostly because of their careful attention to both stability and a set of up to date packages. This is all IMHO of course. One advantage of Mandrake is that, if you have broadband, it’s simple to download ISOs of the 4 CD edition (w/o Star Office and other goodies) and see how you like it. Since I’m still on dial-up that’s not all that great a feature for me. 🙂
I have used mandrake for …. ever lol and 8.2 i can say is honestly the best yet. SUSE is good but i dont know usability itself is nicer in mandrake and also if KDE3 is what u want just download it and install it there are RPM’s for 8.2 its great and easy and a step by step installation If you got broadband try em all
Does anyone know why, when they concentrate on having the latest and greatest versions of most of software packages, that SuSE is still using version 2.95.3 of gcc? Version 3.0 came out some time ago now and 3.1’s release is imminent now.
@ Drongo… if you read the GCC bit above, maybe it is because the 3.0 version is producing slower code..?
Funny SUSE Standard ($39.99). But to ship it to Middle East -43.95$.
