Ex Red Hat heavies launch fancy package manager

Former high-ranking Red Hat executives are behind a commercial package management tool said to facilitate system modifications better than dpkg or rpm. The 2003 startup Specifix says its "Conary" tool enables even heavily modified development systems to track upstream versions easily. The company was co-founded by a former Red Hat chief developer and a former VP of engineering services. More here.

Putting Linux on the Corporate Desktop

Red Hat is the latest Linux company to challenge Mircosoft's hold on the business desktop space with the introduction of Red Hat Desktop, the latest addition to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux family. Matthew Szulik, the company's chief executive, chairman and president met ITWeek to discuss Red Hat's latest efforts and share his views about the Linux landscape.

Opennet Ships Red Hat Linux Desktop

"Opennet, the master distributor for Red Hat Linux in the region, has announced the availability of the new Red Hat Desktop, for the Middle East market. The Red Hat Desktop includes the core Linux operating system, open source business applications including an e-mail client, browser and a full-fledged office suite. “The Red Hat Desktop will be made available in configurations which include either Red Hat Network Proxy or Satellite Servers,” says Tewfik Zitouni, managing director, Opennet. A proxy or satellite Server deployment enables several clients to be deployed and managed simultaneously and promises to simplify the ongoing security and management of systems." Red Hat Updating Both Linux Versions

The update for the company's Enterprise Linux product was released Wednesday, with added support for x86 chips and IBM JS20 blade servers. We don't think so, Red Hat is still the most used/downloaded distro of all. However, it is true that people usually hate the No1 (just because it is No1) and favor any underdog. Having said that, I prefer Slackware because of its simplicity, app stability, fewer distro bugs and speed compared to Fedora.
