SuSE Linux 8.2 Available for Download

From DistroWatch: "SuSE Linux 8.2 has now been spotted on several mirrors. While SuSE does not provide easily install-able ISO images for download, their 8.2 directory has been uploaded to provide a method to install SuSE's Professional Edition directly from FTP servers. First, get the installation image: boot.iso (20MB), then boot from it and follow the instructions provided in this readme file." German and international mirrors. Here is the OSNews review of the 8.2 version.

SuSE 8.2 — Better than Mandrake for New Users?

"I have been using SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional for two weeks now, and it is as close to Linux desktop perfection as I have found so far. (I know I'm not the first to say this, but I figure saying it one more time can't hurt.) This doesn't mean it's totally perfect, and my experience is on one particular laptop and may not be duplicated on your hardware, but this is the first SuSE version I have actually liked -- and the first one I've kept on my "production" machine for any length of time." SuSE: SCO Poses No Legal Threat

An agreement with SCO Group protects Linux seller SuSE from legal action stemming from SCO's accusation that Unix software was copied into Linux, SuSE said. "We have a joint development agreement with them, which includes appropriate cross-licensing arrangements," said SuSE spokesman Joe Eckert on Friday. "Our lawyers feel that covers us from any actions that SCO may take."

SuSE Preps Carrier-Grade OS

"SuSE Linux has readied a set of high-end features that do for its Linux enterprise operating system what spinach does for Popeye. The features beef up SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 to enable it to run applications that require very high levels of reliability, availability, performance and security, such as the applications that telecommunications carriers use to provide their services. This is why the set of features is called SuSE Linux Carrier-Grade Linux (CGL)." Read the article at InfoWorld.

SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop Slated for June

SuSE Linux AG now plans to ship its SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop operating system in June, a delay from original plans to ship it during the just-ended first quarter of 2003. SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, which is in beta testing phase now, will cost $129 per desktop, although discounts would apply to high-volume purchases, InfoWorld reports. OSNews recently posted a review of SuSE's other latest product, SuSE Linux 8.2.

SuSE Linux 8.2: Evolutionary, but not Revolutionary

What a big month this was with many Linux releases (and not just Linux ones). The third most popular Linux distribution (along with Debian), after Red Hat and Mandrake, is SuSE. While the company is more successful in Europe, with their 8.1 release a few months ago they were able to broaden their user base worldwide even more. The new version, 8.2, is coming out in about a week from now, but OSNews had early access to it so we were able to evaluate it. SuSE Ships its First Server Product for Intel Itanium 2 CPUs

SuSE Linux today announced the general availability of the SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 for the Intel Itanium Processor Family, and that it has been chosen to drive parts of the "TeraGrid," a scientific computing system accessible to researchers across the United States. eWeek also covers this release as part of a Linux-special article regarding the SuSE, Red Hat and Mandrake upcoming releases.

Revisions Extend Linux’s Reach

"There's a strong argument to be made that all the pieces needed for an effective Linux desktop system for the enterprise now exist. Less clear, however, is whether a Linux vendor can collect and package those elements into something that's ready—right out of the box—for the mainstream corporate desktop. This is what SuSE Linux Inc. set out to do with its SuSE Linux Office Desktop." Read the article at eWeek.
