SuSE Plans Longer Linux Cycle

Linux distributor SuSE said last week that future versions of the open source operating system may arrive at a slower rate, a move designed to increase stability for users. UPDATE: SuSE Linux 9.0 offers sneak peek at 2.6 Linux kernel, 32/64-bit support, and easier Windows migration, the official press release says. Chris Schläger, Director of Distribution Development at SuSE, explains some details of the most important new features.

SuSE Linux Desktop Review

"To investigate SuSE’s Linux Desktop, which is based on the company’s Linux Enterprise Server technology, we ran it alongside a number of Windows systems in a ‘live’ editorial production environment for around two weeks. The idea was to see how well this business-oriented operating system/application software bundle worked for a moderately technical user working in a Windows-dominated world." SuSE to Sign Sun, HP Desktop Deals; SuSE Justifies Desktop Linux

SuSE is close to wrapping up OEM deals with Sun and Hewlett-Packard that will call for the Linux distributor to bundle its version of the open source operating system on select client and server systems from Sun and on HP's lower-end servers. SuSE challenges analyst warning not to experiment with Windows alternatives until 2005 and has claimed that demand from enterprises prompted it to release a desktop product and that take-up will grow rapidly, according to chief executive Richard Seibt.

Wal-Mart Replaces Mandrake PCs with SuSE PCs

Wal-Mart and its PC source, MicroTelPC, have replaced their Mandrake PC offerings with SuSE PCs. We do not know if the financial status of MandrakeSoft and the poor marketing and retail availability in US had a role in this switch. SuSE PC prices start at $298. Wal-Mart continues to sell LindowsOS and Lycoris PCs (prices start at $199). Also, hardware prices seem to go down, as Gateway started to market a very cheap, yet fully featured 15" XGA laptop (2.2GHz Celeron, 30GB, 256MB RAM, DVD/CD-RW), the 400SP, for only $799 US (customize it to exclude the carrying case and the extra warranty).

SuSE: SCO’s Linux Claims are ‘Curious’

SuSE Linux plans to continue honoring its commitments to UnitedLinux, despite allegations by SCO Group --a fellow founding member of the alliance-- that Linux contains unauthorized intellectual property. Meanwhile, Linux vendors MandrakeSoft and Red Hat --which are not members of the UnitedLinux group-- said they had not been contacted about the allegations and did not see them affecting business.
