You'd be surprised how popular it is here. It's the most played sport at youth level, followed by rugby then Aussie Rules. I and all my friends played it as kids but that popularity just doesn't seem to translate to a professional level. If you want to do well and you've got some talent you have to go to Europe.

Mostly I think it hasn't taken off due to a mix of messy in-fighting and mismanagement, two things they're looking to correct with the new "football" push and the creation of the 'A' League.
Still, with a small population like ours and two high profile football codes already in place, it's going to be an uphill battle. But, fingers crossed, if the Socceroos do well that may change
