Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu Ubuntu is developing the "upstart", a replacement for the init daemon, the process spawned by the kernel that is responsible for starting, supervising and stopping all other processes on the system. The article compares upstart to Solaris SMF, Apple's launchd, and initng.

I like Ubuntu, specifically Xubuntu, but it looks like I'll be on the search again for a Linux that doesn't suck when this gets released. Why? As if handling init on Debian based systems wasn't an overly complex pain in the ass before, Ubuntu seems to want to make this even worse. And while they're at it they've decided to replace cron, inetd, and god knows what else.
