Actually comparing Vim to notepad or other modern editors is foolish. Vim is a command driven editor like emacs as opposed to a mouse/menu driven one. Ed and ex are probably other editors in the same mould.
It's a different metaphor. Nothing to do with open source, but closed minds is prolly right. Once you use one of these editors it's hard switching to anything else.

More over, it is a sacrilege to compare Vi/Vim with any other editor except perhaps emacs.
