PC-BSD "iXsystems, an enterprise-class hardware solution provider, announced today its acquisition of PC-BSD, a rock solid UNIX operating system based on FreeBSD. PC-BSD is a fully functional desktop operating system running FreeBSD version 6, with a KDE desktop interface and graphical system installer. Its PBI system, developed exclusively for PC-BSD, lets users download and install their applications in a self-extracting and installing format. iXsystems' acquisition of PC-BSD will provide funding to the PC-BSD project to increase distribution of PC-BSD and develop future versions of PC-BSD. Development is currently underway for a version of PC-BSD that will allow for easy installation and operation on servers, workstations, and laptops."

"People go all in panic mode about this"

Its BSD , its how BSD sucessfull projects where killed in the past.

Take out the copyright owner , by buying him off or have him close and not work on the project anymore , or give him a job working on the same thing but on a closed license like Apple and Microsoft do. I dont like describing or talking about it , because it give those people ideas.

"but lets not forget that the more popular Linux distributions are ALL owned by companies."

No , they all are worked on by companies and the trademark belong to them , but the code and distribution exist because of the Free Software community and there own community of users who pay to support it and contribute to it , the code belong to anyone who as a copy , just not the trademark.

Red Hat could not stop the creation of Mandriva or control fedora core.

Debian cannot stop the creation of Linspire , Ubuntu , Xandros.

Linus cannot stop anyone from using the Linux code as GPL , but he can stop anyone from using the trademark Linux in most country ( there is problem with the trademarks in some country , due to Linus disregard and contempt of the law ).

iXsystems made me really happy , They have taken out PC-BSD. They also show that BSD can be bought to those who falsely claimed it was imposible ( because they dont know there history or reality ). Its not a good thing for Open Source and Free software , its excellent for killing BSD projects or rendering them less competitive and even extinct.

Really Happy mode !!
