GTK+ GTK+ 2.8.0 has been released. You can download it from here, and read the release notes here. GTK+ 2.8.0 depends on the Cairo vector graphics library for rendering most of the GTK+ widgets, bringing graphics capabilities as antialiased shapes, alpha blending, and gradients.

Anyway, it's quite amazing how long I've been using the current GNOME icons now and I still love them. ;) Every once in a while I try one of the new shiny icon sets, but always get tired of them very quickly.

Yeah, I agree. The original icon set is the only really complete one, so I always end up using it too. It might not be as shiny as Crystal, or Apple's Aqua icons I use on my iBook, but at least it is coherent, and it doesn't pretend to be anything more than a default icon set.

As far as I have seen are Bluecurve icons also very complete. Ok but their from Redhat and I don't know if they have a special copyright on it.

Yes but even the default icon set should look good because otherwise it is all on the distributers to ship their versions with better icons.

This goes in the other direction than Clearlooks which is a great theme which the distributers will adapt so that Gnome will look equal in many distributions which is better for recognition of Gnome for new users.

If they use different icon sets Gnome looks different everywhere instead having one good icon set which many distributers could use.

Hardly anyone uses a different icon set. Red Hat has Bluecurve which isn't really better and Novell uses the same style, just with some tweaks (as Jimmac works for them).
