Uhm... Last time I checked the Atom is an EM64T processor fully capable of running x64 versions of windows - I have one here running XP x64 just fine as well as a AMD64 build of Ubuntu, so what exactly are you saying?

Some chipsets -- especially some mobile chipsets -- do not support the x86-64, even when the processor does. Also, on some motherboards with x86-64 chipsets the motherboard traces aren't connected for 64-bit addressing. That's likely the cause of the confusion.

(Look under the "WORKAROUND" section.)

The most popular models of the Atom processor (the N and Z mobile versions) have the 64bit extensions disabled. Only the desktop version of the Atom can run in 64bit mode.
