I have WinXP Pro installed and I have 2G of RAM here and guess what: windows always eats 400Mb of RAM (don't worry the system is tuned up etc etc). I don't mind actually, the whole thing feels just very smooth and very comfortable to work with... so why should I care much if the next release consumes like 50-100 Mb more?
You may not care because you have 2GB of RAM, but what about folks who only have 512MB or less, and don't want to upgrade their systems?
What about those folks who don't want to upgrade their video cards to meet the requirements of Vista? The need for a 256MB video card? WTF?
The point is, all this fancy GUI bullshit is merely to push system requirements up in an unnecessary manner, and is a facade for the things that were taken out of the original Vista spec.
In simpler words...Don't judge a book by its cover.
Or in this case...Don't judge an OS by its GUI.
What does it offer you, as the customer, over other or existing solutions? Something? Nothing?
My curiosity is...What's really under Vista's skirt?
I don't care what she's wearing, I wanna know what she's capable of?
Actually, when I think about it...I actually need as much available RAM as possible for the applications I use. (The more free RAM, the less use of swap, the less time to crunch my solutions).
So unlike you, I do mind if the OS takes an unnecessary amount of RAM.

Crazy that the video is 470MB's that is almost exactly the ammount of memory VISTA beta 1 uses to do nothing at all.
Still the windows do look cool.
Shame it is soooo slooooowww
