If kwin crashes, your apps should still be open, you just can't move them around anymore.

Or did you mean that kwin crashed and brought X down with it?

I don't bother to check. If something goes wrong with the window manager, I clobber everything and get back to normal. I feel that's the safest approach. At least I don't have to reboot.
