We're still in the slow news period, so let's talk about something we discussed before: blocking advertisements on websites. Up until, well, today, I didn't block ads - not because of some ethical objection or whatever, but simply because I couldn't be bothered to setup AdBlock. Today, after taking a closer look at some of the websites I frequent, I decided to take the plunge and install AdBlock on all my machines. The following set of screenshots should pretty much explain why.

I'm just going to ignore your rant about viewing ads, since that was already cleared up by righard and Gullible Jones.
There is no sense of personal integrity, no sense of responsibility, no sense of community in the majority of the under 30 crowd. Sad.
I am so sick of hearing this. Every generation for the past 100 years or more has been complaining about those young whipper-snappers, how they are so entitled, so ungrateful, etc. Yet if anything, the general population has become more educated and responsible over time. I guess it's human nature to think that your generation is somehow better than the generations younger than you, but that doesn't mean that it's true.

first of all: As the dictionary defines stealing: To take (the property of another) without right or permission.
If I go to some site and read it without downloading there virus ridden ads, I do not take that text, the text is still there when I leave so I haven't stolen anything.
Secondly, Most times I use Links as a browser, it does not display images, Am I a filthy scummy thief for using a different browser?
Thirdly; I once got a can promotional soda when walking in a city, I drank it but didn't really look at the can, or any of their advertisements (It could've been poison 
. Did I steal that can? Are you calling the police? ... I bit cliche but never mind that; Am I stealing when going to the toilet during commercial breaks?
Lastly; As already noted here, most ads a payed by click, must I click all the ads to not be labeled a thief? And if not,... Must I read and look at all the ads because if not why not just block them.
Many sites run on the income made of advertisement, jolly good for them. This system is however not full proof, I can get the content without downloading those ads and there is not a law that can stop me doing so. It's fully legal, and if the content providers don't like that they should have found another business-model.

The Verge pointed me to a blog post by Leap Motion - which reveals how their Kinect-like motion control works with Windows 8. "From the second you plug in your Leap Motion Controller, you'll be able to browse the web and interact with your computer just by moving your hands and fingers in the air. With Leap Motion technology and Windows, you can do everything that's possible with multi-touch inputs - without actually touching anything. This also means that existing applications in Windows 7 and 8 will respond to your natural hand and finger movements. Soon, we'll show you how Leap Motion will work with Mac OS X." Quite cool.

PocketNow interviews Marc Dillon, and there's an interesting note about why Jolla is keeping the display properties under wraps: "We're leaving some of those details out because we do understand that there are a lot of really big players in the market and they tend to take certain components in the market and dominate them. We created the ability to actually be able to run Sailfish on multiple hardware displays and be able to swap components, so this is part of the demand and supply planning phase. We are committed to this industrial design which is a 4.5-inch display, an 8 megapixel camera on the back and a front-facing camera at the front, and the exact specs of the display we'll provide when we're close to delivery." Something you rarely hear anything about.

The Wii U is turning into the 21st century's Virtual Boy.

"In NixOS, the entire operating system - the kernel, applications, system packages, configuration files, and so on - is built by the Nix package manager from a description in a purely functional build language. The fact that it's purely functional essentially means that building a new configuration cannot overwrite previous configurations. Most of the other features follow from this." Interesting approach. A Linux distribution, sure, but with some very refreshing ideas about system configuration.

Appfour added, among other features, C/C++ support to its new version of AIDE. From Android-IDE, "Now you can write parts of your app or your whole app in C/C++ on your device. AIDE supports the Standard Android NDK toolchain (GCC 4.6 + Bionic, STL, ...). No changes are necessary if you want to build an app developed on a PC with Eclipse. C/C++ development is fully integrated: Build errors appear in the error list and files can easily be navigated to with Go to file. The editor supports C/C++ syntax highlighting."

Ars nails it: "The answer is that Google did announce what amounts to a fairly substantial Android update yesterday. They simply did it without adding to the update fragmentation problems that continue to plague the platform. Listen, paywalls are NOT the answer. Like it or not, ad based revenue bringing you the content you want is the best arrangement anyone has thought up yet. You do NOT get to filter out the advertising you feel like ignoring when it is that website's only means of generating income. It's theft, plain and simple. If you use adblock/script block you are a no good, filthy, scummy thief. Don't dance around it, call it what it is.
