A less limiting version of CLI's would allow for graphical displays. Take something like gnuplot: it definitely has a command driven interface, but it also pops open a graphical window to display a graph.

Actually, consider the address bar of your browser. It's a pretty simple CLI now, but is in many ways evolving - particularly since you can already run Javascript in it. Or for that matter, the Firebug console, for a more powerful example...
