A better question might be "If there are people who refuse to use any Linux DE but Gnome 2 for the rest of their lives, how can we gently tell them to shove off back to Windows XP?".
Gnome Shell is much better than Gnome 2. Unity is of about the same quality. If people are resistant to change in Linux, then Linux definitely isn't the operating system for them.
