Microsoft and Apple can develop decent font rendering technology, what's holding up the people responsible for it on Linux?
Oh, nothing, just this little thing called "patents" and "legal threats". Or haven't you read the thing on Freetype's site about Apple and software patents?

I notice he doesn't point out how badly the fonts suck, particularly the serif fonts. Letters and bits of letters squashed together, the wrong bits emphasised (like the top loop of a capital B), lack of symmetry in letters that should be symmetrical like capital Ts and Is, serifs too big for the letter, that sort of thing.
