I'm sure most people who aren't tech-savvy and/or giving these things as gifts probably isn't keenly aware of Apple's release schedules. "
Most people who aren't tech savvy don't care. Those who care only need to do 10 minutes of research.
Because people would get an iPhone for Christmas and then bitch about the fact the refresh happened 3 or 4 months later. Honestly, there's no good time to release a product. None. Everyone's a critic when they fucked up and didn't put in the research. That goes for ant company and any product line too. Apple is not a special case here.
