It is not overly surprising. Sound intensity, in decibel, is also a logarithmic scale. Star brightness magnitude, defined under ancient Greece by astronomers using only their unaided eyes, has been fitted in modern times to a logarithmic scale.
I've heard in the past that it was because our biological sensors have a logarithmic response to stimuli. In such a case, this proof that thought process too follow logarithmic scales would still be a new, relatively surprising result
