Whilst it is nice that the software is getting in sync with the hardware, I worry that we will end up swinging all the way to flat design for all platforms without any choice.

I agree, but that is exactly where we are headed, a flat look with lots of empty space everywhere. The benefit of the flat look that no one talks about is that this look requires only a very simple and rudimentary video card. The days of needing an expensive video card or dual-cards in your computer, or expensive video processor in your tablet or smartphone are over. Unless you are a gamer or the manufacturer has enabled 1080p video (a whole other subject considering that you need to have at least a 44" display to even SEE 1080p video's benefits) a very rudimentary and simple video card will do, since there are no Aero or Compiz or other such fun video stuff that used to be desirable and fun to have until Vista ruined the experience for everyone with its overkill.
