X11, Window Managers "The first major version release of the X Window System in more than a decade, X11R7.0, is the first release of the completely modularized and autotooled source code base for the X Window System. X11R6.9, its companion release, contains identical features, and uses the exact same source code as X11R7.0, but with the traditional imake build system."

AAH! No, you shut the hell up! Goddamn why do so many people on osnews and other sites feel like others are not allowed to have an opinion other than "wow great job guys, you are so right in every way!!!".

YOU, shut the hell up. YOU are the only one who has added absolutely zero interesting information to this thread.

The commenters had interesting points. I had no idea that autotools was old and not ideal. I had no idea that it was being selected for its ubiquity and not because of its superiority over other build systems.

That's actually an opinion, not a fact. autotools is used for most of the software running on a GNU/Linux system because it *does* work, proven and reliably. Learning it takes some RTFM, but that's not something everyone needs to worry about, because the work has been done by other people already.

X.org was split to make developing X.org easier. We can sit here and read people who never read a line of code from it complain all day about the change and how it makes it longer or harder to build it, but there's absolutely nothing to gain from that.
