A beta version of Magneto leaked out: This version of the OS, which is expected to be called Windows Mobile 2005, will have a number of significant changes from the current one. Elsewhere, the Opie Project is pleased to announce the availability of version 1.2 with many new features.
Nice screenshots there from Opie!
If someone installs it, please send me a screenshot of OSNews running on its included web browser. Thx!
Opie doesn’t have an “included web browser”, you can install konq/e or opera is you want a browser. On some other PDA related news: GPE has released version 2.6, screenshots available at http://handhelds.org/~florian/gallery/
>GPE has released version 2.6
I see no such release on their web site’s front page. If they really released it as such, they should do a better job announcing it.
Also, it’s kinda sad that GPE still haven’t fix this one:
http://handhelds.org/~bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1255
This is an imperative fix so we and others can serve the right mobile pages to GPE so web browsing can be more pleasurable on GPE handhelds.
Well, GPE doesn’t ship dillo anymore, since the dillo people still use gtk1.2 and will swith to FLTK2 soon. Minimo is the browser that is installed in the images for devices with more than 16MB of flash. See http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/ for details on that browser. Screenshots of minimo are on the previously mentioned screenshots URL. And yes, GPE releases should be announced better.
ok, Minimo works out of the box with OSNews’ mobile pages then. We have special support for it, but I have not seen more than 10 people in a whole year browsing with it.
I just had another look, there were 29 hits from minimo in 13 months time on osnews. But the browser’s user agent is always the same:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Familiar 0.72; en-US; rv:1.7a) Gecko/20040218 Minimo/0.1
Can you confirm that this is *still* the same user agent even for the latest version of minimo? To check your browser agent go here: http://osnews.com/ua.php
HI,
Hmmm….from what I recall, GPE 2.6 has been out for quite a while.
http://openzaurus.org/newsletters/2005.01/
has screenshots, nov last year.
Also, does anybody have any word of when the new OpenZaurus will be out? (It was meant to out this month – anybody have any words on whether it’s being postponed?)
thanks,
Victor
OpenZaurus 3.5.3 and Familiar 0.8.2 should be out next week if no problems pop up out of the blue. We are finetuning scripts and more small things like that at the moment.
Cool. Very cool.
I hope that
vi /etc/ipkg.conf
ipkg update
ipkg upgrade
will work as expected
It still uses that user agent, but I will mail Doug Turner to correct the familiar and minimo version.
Hi,
Thanks a lot dude =). Absolutely fantastic, can’t wait for it. (figuratively speaking…hehehe)
btw, do you know if this release include GPE 2.6 (with the memory improvements in matchbox) ?
thanks,
victor
I migrated my ipaq 3800 to Opie + familiar and played with it a bit. In the end i went back to PPC because my wife’s old PPC is dying and I don’t use mine much anymore since i got a notebook.
The one thing I really missed was a wordprocessor like PocketWord, something that would output RTF or OpenOffice-compatible files. Instead I had a wide selection of little games and a fully-ssh-able strongarm linux system.
oo ah.
is possible to install on these devices?
in the download page i just see ipaq models
You can get a pretty good idea of supported handhelds by visiting http://handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/SupportedHandheldSummary or by checking the page of your favourite embedded (linux) distro.
Can someone tell me how in hell “Windows Mobile 2005” has anything to do with something that looks to be “linux based PDA system”
They are two small story snippets that have to do with PocketPC’s. Read the blurb: Elsewhere, the Opie Project is pleased to announce…
It seems the new PIM apps are looking more and more unpolished in each relese… The Today screen still has that ugly graphic at the top that looks like a bunch of cut up graphics with mismatched colors. The large icons in the PIM apps have cropped eges and look bad. Don’t get me wrong I’m sure there is major under the hood changes but I think this project needs an art team. no?
