Two BeOS tutorials have been released. The first one explains which settings to use with WonderBrush when working on icons. It is available in English, Dutch and German. The second one is a complete set of instructions on how to get the unique im_kit working. This one is available in English and Dutch.
Ha, Dutch is spoken be a few million humans, that’s nothing on a world scale. But in OS land, we still count 🙂

Yup. Shows localisation in an OS is often the result of a tiny amount of enthiousastic individuals. If you have a few nuts that are willing to do a bit of work, it will be done.
That also reminds me: I absolutely hate reading tutorials/help files in my native dutch. I suddenly have to mentally switch terms from english (most experience with) to dutch. Often forecfully translated words are awkward.
The Wonderbrush tutorial is informative, but short. That’s either a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it
The IM_Kit tutorial…wow. Didn’t know IMing was in such an advanced state on the BeOS. Smileys look good, although it’s a bit odd they’re skewed. Quite helpful, might give it a go soon.
I was dying for a tutorial like the one on im_kit. The most recently released alpha is *old* and *buggy*, and therefor having a new build available + instructions, makes my BeOS experience a lot easier

Localisation is great for more non-geek types though.

Ha, halfway the nineties a scientist once wrote a semi-serious article analyzing the occurences of English words in Dutch texts. Extrapolating the graph, he predicted that around the year 2000, Dutch would be written as Double English instead of Double Dutch. 🙂
offtopic: Just think about africa and localization. For example the bantu languages are spoken by about 60 milion people. Each language in that family has aobut 1 to 2 milion native speakers. So how many african localizations do you know about?

Well, ok, but realistically, how many of the 60 Million Africans own a computer?
Also, I imagine that Dutch is spoken by more than the 16 million in the country itself, since it’s also spoken by many in Suriname, the Carribean, Indonesia, and some African countries as well.
The official count is that there are slightly about 20 million dutch speakers in the world. But this is getting really off-topic.
On-topic: Does anyone happen to know if there’s a way to import history files into im_kit? Does it support recording history/chatlogs at all?
The server crashes on my ZETA installation and when it doesn’t crash I cannot find MSN at all…
Make sure you deleted the previous installation manually. Otherwise a new install won’t work and results in crashes!
Works very nice.
You can even make a link to a people’s contact to the desktop and that will be updated with the colour of the online status…neat!!!
Now I hope the messages of InfoPopper get a look&feel overhaul because I think its quite ugly, but kudo’s to the developers!
By using (and saving) a BeOS query for filetype: Person based on attribute values of
IM Status “is” Available [OR]
IM Status “is” Away
you can make a Tracker based buddy list.
You then can save the query to your desktop or BeMenu as “Online Contacts” or whatever you want.
note: since BeOS’s (and consequently Zeta’s) queries are live, they are automatically updated when a contact changes IM Status.
