“In accordance with its commitment to empowering users worldwide with the most innovative Linux operating system, Mandriva today released Mandriva 2006. The new version of the company’s flagship product merges pioneer technologies from Conectiva and Lycoris, as well as spanning for the first time a one-year release cycle.” Buy it from the Mandriva store, or wait until the download version is released. Update: Gael Duval, the founder of Mandriva, just notified me that Mandriva 2006 can be installed via ftp. Mirrors are here, choose “public ftp mirrors”. CD images are not yet available.
* Discovery/Lx: Discovery/Lx is the product resulting from convergence between Mandriva and Lycoris technology. With a new look and feel, new theme, new set of icons, and better ergonomics, Discovery/Lx is the ideal product for beginners looking to switch to Linux.
* PowerPack: PowerPack is the product resulting from convergence between Mandriva and Conectiva technology. It is a full-featured desktop including everything for office, internet, multimedia and software development. PowerPack is the ideal product for power users.
* PowerPack+: PowerPack+ combines the power of PowerPack and a comprehensive set of world-class server applications. Thanks to easy-to-use installation and configuration wizards, PowerPack+ is the ideal product for Small Office / Home Office users.
Yes I read that on their site then tried to find more, but, nothing!
As I was neither a Mandrake, Lycoris or Connectiva user before, I kinda feel completely lost as to what I am supposed to get and what are the benefits of these 3 versions. Mandriva sounds like a club where you have to be initiated to know what they are talking about and what they sell.
Very poor marketing & sales initiative.
Yes. It’s so incredibly difficult, you have to – are you ready for the shock? – go to the Mandriva store: http://store.mandriva.com – and then click on each version, and read about what’s in it.
Wow. That was tough.
(The executive summary – Discovery is for beginners. It has fewer packages, fewer packages installed by default, and a simple newbie-friendly interface. PowerPack is for advanced / normal Linux users. The ‘standard’ version. PowerPack+ is supposedly for soho users. It’s PowerPack with a few more bits. Especially server bits.)
Yes you must be exceptionally intelligent and I must be a terribly stupid prospect.
You see……. I just do what people do when they want information on a product:
– I go to the home page (www.mandriva.com)
– then when i see that big picture that says “Mandriva Linux 2006”, well guess what? I click on it (are you with me so far genius?)
– Then when I see a big picture that says “Powerpack” I also click on it and I arrive at http://www.mandriva.com/products/2006/powerpack
And it’s where there is simply zilch zero nada information on the product. Just a couple of lines which say nothing about the features & benefits. So little information that the first poster posted them in here.
Your sarcastic comment just proved my point. People need to be initiated and _know_ about your product and know where to go on your site to get the information they want.
Wow is that too though to understand for you genius ?
I stick ot my point: your sales & marketing SUCKS ! And being sarcastic with potential customers on this site will not help either !
The store link is the one in the PR, so I don’t think it’s so difficult to find.
http://www.mandriva.com is our corporate site about the company more than the product. http://www.mandrivalinux.com is the product site. This is an old distinction that doesn’t make much sense any more, which is why a new http://www.mandriva.com has been built and will replace both sites very soon.
In fact, to follow up further, the two first links in the flash email are:
http://store.mandriva.com (which will take you to the store, where finding info on every product is super easy)
and:
http://www.mandriva.com/individuals/products/2006
which takes you to the 2006 products page, with a quick summary of all three products and a ‘more info’ link for each.
I REALLY don’t accept the charge that this is bad PR.
Redhat and Novell must be having a good laugh at your “marketing”. But hey it’s not bad for a second-tier *giggles*
The guy as a point.
“It’s so incredibly difficult”
I guess , you have to – are you ready for the shock? – make an hyperlink directly to the Mandriva store instead of making an half ass description of whats in the boxes on Mandriva.com .
If Mandriva would be more professionnal in the way they do there release , they would like , I dont know :
* Start a Countdown to a release.
* Show in preview what new technology are in the boxes.
* Have the boxes ready to ship the same day of the Club releases for those who pre-ordered them during countdown.
* Offer dirt cheap level so that poor People can get a membership to Mandriva Club during countdown and Download previous old version and get free version CD access on Mandriva Club on the Club releases
* Advertise in the press and On the web.
* Make a public relase show like Apple CEO does and invite the press.
* Have some turn-key offer ( 20 Desktop and 20 laptop )
of good quality pre-installed with Mandriva powerpack + for dirtcheap.
* Have some Gadget (example : archos ) special offer on the release day.
* have some prototype Hardware specifically only for Mandriva
Control the press and Momentum by thinking how to write a release for press release before actually sending it so you dont have to do “update”
So you dont end up with :
Second-tier Linux makers release new products
http://news.com.com/Second-tier+Linux+makers+release+new+products/2…
http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/soa/Second_tier_Linux_makers_…
Etc …
Mandriva release are non event when it should be a really big worldwide party …
Why is Mandriva “the most innovative Linux operating system”? and it’s about the only one now that dont offer free download as it’s released. I hope they taken the penguin out with the stary eyes, because it needs to look more profressional like SuSE.
I dont like it but it worked great on my mums computer, but lacks loads of libraries for compiling.
The starry-eyed penguin is gone. It has been replaced with a very attractive stylized penguin design.
Yep agreed, and 2006 is clearly one of the most polished general purpose distributions out there – if anyone’s unsure about that, have a quick flick through the distrowatch top 100 and do a little mental comparison (assuming you’ve tried a variety of different distros).
…it’s still not ready for the desktop.
care to elaborate ?
or was this just a very poor attempt at a troll
mandriva is more ready for the desktop than all versions of windows.
Care to elaborate why it is more ready than the most used OS? lol.
Please if your are going to say somone is poor at trolling at least don’t do it yourself.
I think paying for linux is retarded. Nice to see a new update…but I have no idea what makes it so innovative…
Care to elaborate why it is more ready than the most used OS? lol.
Please if your are going to say somone is poor at trolling at least don’t do it yourself.
Just because it is the most used does not mean it is perfect. Far from it.
Out of the box Mandriva 2006 is more use to a user than any version of Windows.
try it and see, or stfu
“Just because it is the most used does not mean it is perfect. Far from it.

<sarcasm>
Now you’re being DELUSIONAL. Windows is used by more people therefore is better. Sure Mandriva sports a intuitive graphical install, autodetects your hardware and installs the appropriate drivers, and requires no spyware or antivirus software, unlike Windows.
Ease of use, security, and out-of-the-box support for all of your hardware != better. More users does.
Ease of use, security, and out-of-the-box support for all of your hardware != better. More users does.
hahahaha I laughed so much I spilled my beer.
so because there are more windows users than linux or mac users then windows is better ?
then by you flawed logic there is more ford drivers than ferrari drivers, therefore ford are better than ferrari ?
if you were taking the piss, then nice one, I did enjoy the laugh… but if you were serious, then fcuk me, you need some serious re-education dude
And yet hordes of linux fans want to use the same argument to claim their system is better than the BSD’s
“Well, hello there, mr kettle!” “Hi mr pot, you black bastard!”
try it and see, or stfu
Tried it.
Seen it.
Conclusion: It sucks.
Please elaborate or stfu. God these people are just a pain in the ass. Can someone at least talk about Mandriva ? Why is it impossible to have a nice chat about it without a bunch of Windows/OS X/Ubuntu fanboys destroying every single peace of logical and adult talking ?
No way…As much as I like Mandriva and Linspire, both are inferior products when it comes to mobility.
Wifi, Bluetooth, Email solutions are all inferior and much harder to install than the Windows equivalent. There is so much more USABLE software on Windows right now compared to all the broken things/half baken on Linux.
Things are improving fast and I have high hopes for KDE4 which will compete with Vista.
“Care to elaborate why it is more ready than the most used OS?”
Windows as no Supercomputer ( not gaining any , anytime soon ) , is 10% of the server ( Dropping in percentage even do they have more each year ) and is 65% of the desktop ( and dropping fro GNU/Linux and Apple Mac OS X ). With Asia ( Not just China anymore ) , India ( the biggest Free Democracy by population in the world ), Africa ( the forgotten continent ) all switching to GNU/Linux to make a technological comeback. I think your most used software is more like the most illegally shipped software.
Now lets establish some pre-discussion agreement so that we dont go and oppose each others view on details you dont know or choose to forget. LOL @ delusion
That wasn’t a troll… That is directly from the Mandriva website. Why would you even think it was a troll?
I swear, you people on this website are absolutely pathetic.
GROW UP.
Yeah, welcome to OSNews. If you bring up a valid shortcoming of Linux, GNOME, Amiga, or any other masturbatory device used by the pathetic children here, you will get modded down.
Thing is, I didn’t even do that.

What exactly does a version number of “2006” when it’s still 2005 mean?
Say the same to car manufacturers. They always start to sell next years model when it is summer this year.
I’m a club member and downloaded the 4-CD PowerPack. I’m really disapointed, as this much anticipated version has some serious issues for desktop OS. For example, digital cameras are not detected at all, USB flash drives are not handled adequately, and during installation a 5th and 6th CD is requested, yet this release has only four. These are very basic flaws, and are suggestive of sloppy production process and quality control. Interestingly, digital cameras worked well on Mdv 2005 running on the same hardware.
I’m going to give Suse 10.0 a try.
There are 7 cd’s in the powerpack – 1-4 and 5-7 in the torrents. If you’re a club member you should know that. Also, most digital cameras work just fine. I guess you can find some that won’t work, though – as with most distros.
Linux, like the Macintosh, attracts legions of fanboys. These penguinistas form communities that are irresistible to trolls. Though especially rabid on defense, penguinistas can rarely give it as good as they take it. Linux trolls, in the guise of advocacy, often go to other communities to evangelize about Linux on the slimmest pretense. Unlike most drama, the flame wars between OS advocates aren’t entertaining.

And yet, you have succeeded in doing it.
I’ve previously used 3 versions of mandrake.
yesterday i attempted to install mandriva 2006 on a dell optiplex gx60 at work.
in terms of mandrake being as adaptive as windows, it’s just not there yet..
2006 could not properly detetct the driver for the onboard video.
even when i attempted to run xorgconfig and was presented with over 100 drivers i couldnt get the proper one to show.
on the otherhand, i used mandrake 2005 on a shuttle pc and it detected everything on it with ease..
have you told mandriva about it?
and what chip is the onboard video using, intel?
ugh, i see that it have been replied to. but i dont recall seeing the replies counter showing anything above 0. people, please use the reply function am i going blind or something?
2006 could not properly detetct the driver for the onboard video.
You need to get the latest xorg sources from CVS (the xf-4_2_99_902 branch), then recompile you X server, then add:
Option “FGLRAMDACMapping” “4098”
Option “AGPGARTApeture” “64”
Option “PCI2:3” “3”
to your xorg.conf
Thanks for the info on that.. i’l make an attempt at this and see what happens.

I’ve used many, many distros, and the truth is that they all have their strengths and weaknesses. I state what I think are Mandrake’s strengths at the risk of fanboy/flame [aka, ad hominem] attacks:
Mandriva strikes a balance between providing good, user-friendly configuration tools for the average user. However, unlike some distros, these tools do not take over and prevent the power user from manually configuring the entire system to their liking. It is this balance I find appealing. Sometimes I just want to use a friendly, easy desktop. Other times I need to recompile the kernel and manually install some specific kernel modules. I can do either one with Mandriva Also, things like menus work on all desktops. If I decide to user Blackbox, I haven’t lost all my application menus.
On the weaknesses front, Mandriva has always struggled with too-rapid release cycles. Thus, we will now see releases like 2005, 2006, etc. – annual, hopefully stable releases. On the other hand, bleeding-edge frequent interim releases will continue to be available from the club. I am using 2006, and find it to be “fairly” stable, but yes there are some quirky bugs. I hope patches (not new releases) will take care of some of these issues. I do not work for Mandriva, but I have followed its progress since the beginning. I also use many other Distros, including the BSD’s.
Tommy “Penguinista” Dison
This is a pretty fair summary. I’ve always used Mandrake, and liked it, but with 10.1 moved the people I support over to Suse – real difficulties installing on two different hardware configurations, surprisingly enough. 2005 seems to have overcome this sort of thing. I’m on 2005 now myself, and stability isn’t an issue.
The great strength is the administrative tools, the large software collection, and the fact that it just works. It isn’t particularly fast, and its less easy to customize or keep up to date than Debian, but its only when you have to reconfigure things in Debian that you appreciate what the various ‘drakes’ do. All in all, it strikes me as about as user friendly and manageable as XP or OS X, though different from either, as they are from each other. Better than YaST to administer, at least in 9.2. Documentation is not particularly wonderful. The Suse documentation is a lot better.
Someone here says he had trouble with his camera. I do too, but I also have trouble on two flavors of Windows, and on Suse as well. Card readers are foolproof though.
Every now and then I think about leaving Mandrake and going to Debian, but I’m used to it, and it just works so I don’t bother. Its one of the three or four you can safely recommend to people who want to move away from Windows, but in a measured way.
Already download Kubuntu ( cost free … ) and running archlinux ( Ultimate ! )
Congratulations to you. But please tell me. What does this have to do with the release of Madriva? Or are you simply capitulating on your obviously larger testicular girth than the rest of us?
lol I love poetry !
Thx dude !
Is anybody gonna actually pay for this crap when you can get everything for free.
In some idiotic zeal to get on the good side of moronic “free software” cult members they don’t offer any value-added as an incentive to purchase this cobbled together shit that can be gotten for free anyway.
No wonder Linux on the desktop has failed. When this stuff is more about being in a deranged cult instead of about the technology it’s doomed for failure.
Well, Go look at why SuSE/Novel, HP, IBM, Google, Yahoo are making loads of cash from opensource and Linux. Ten they put back into the community what they make better.
Support and people take the CHOICE to buy Mandriva/Linux and other distros, but I guess in the Microsoft world you never heard of that, have you?
Go listen and learn http://www.itconversations.com/index.html
…a feature on OSNews to ignore the Anonymous peanut gallery and their off-topic drivel?
On topic, Mandrake was a fantastic operating system, my first exposure to Linux. I used 9.1, 9.2, and 10.0 before moving on to GoboLinux and Debian. It worked great with all of my rather estoric hardware, and URPMI is AWESOME. With PLF sources added you can anything you can do in Windows. I have no reason to believe Mandriva is any different.
Those complaining about Mandriva not producing a free download right away should STFU and try to understand how a company can make a profit when it’s product is free software.
..a feature on OSNews to ignore the Anonymous peanut gallery and their off-topic drivel?
There already is. Check your settings page.
“There already is. Check your settings page.”
Haha, well, I insterted my foot in my mouth on that one. Thanks. 🙂
Well then even you dont understand how compnaies make profit and still giving free downloads. Agressive “STFU” just shows the fanboys off, and Mandriva can make money from other sources ,sales it just not where OSS is, it’s the support. Ever wonder how mobile phone companies give you a free £200 state of the art phone for free?, same with opensource.
“…a feature on OSNews to ignore the Anonymous peanut gallery and their off-topic drivel? “
And wind up with trolls getting accounts to post? That means they’ll also have voting power, and then they’ll start doing the real damage.
One way or another trolls will find some way to make their attention deficit disorder obvious, they’re like spammers, only trolls are 20 years younger and can’t be sued yet.
For those willing to install Mandriva 2006 online (FTP) can download boot.iso image from the following link
ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors1/ftp.mandriva.com/MandrivaLinux/official…
I understand Mandriva’s decision of not giving away ISOs immediately. After all they need to make some money to continue producing the excellent distribution.
The only complain I have about Mandriva 2006 is that xorg 6.9cvs with 24 bit depth does not work well with my i810 on board graphics card (odd colors). I hope things are fixed in xorg 6.9/7 final.
I am Mandriva cooker user and latest xorg RPMS (20051011) did not fix the problems with my graphics card.
Tejas Kokje
There are some known problems with the X.org snapshot that 2006 shipped with. We’ll be doing an official update to 6.9 final when it comes out. In the meantime, there’s a fairly well tested unofficial update available from the third party http://www.seerofsouls.com repository. It’s the latest Cooker X.org backported to 2006.0. People who’ve tested it have reported that it fixes several of the problems with the shipped X.org, and I haven’t heard of any regressions yet. You might want to try it.
I tried to install Madriva 2006 the other day because i heard the hardware detection was good. The installer loaded ok but i couldn’t get my keyboard to work. Eventually found my mouse/keyboard where around the wrong way – so much for good hardware support!!! Linux is so not ready for the desktop!
you will find the solution to that in the faq under the IBCK section. happy reading
I have never used Mandriva yet I feel it’s my god-given right to blather endlessly about Knoppix here.
Seriously, Mandriva sounds like a good distro for a certain kind of user. Companies like Mandriva and Red Hat have a right to sell their particular flavor, and more importantly corporate users aren’t going to flock to a free distro when they know they get zero accountability for its performance. They just aren’t.
Good luck to Mandriva, coming from a Debian n00b here.

Moulinneuf, when even fellow linux “advocates” laugh at you, then you know you have a major personality disorder. When you start throwing around numbers like windows has 65% of the desktop market, and 10% of the server market then you’re just a basketcase.
“when even fellow linux “advocates” laugh at you”
I guess , I missed that one , care to show me the GNU/Linux advocates that your reffering to that laught at me ? I know a couple morons who think they are , but it could be different ones. What can I say anonymous your too many personnalities for me to consider you at all legit and sane.
“then you know you have a major personality disorder.”
I have a major personality disorder because some unamed people laugh at me ? Thats really ridiculous.
“When you start throwing around numbers”
Because you assume wrongly , that I trow numbers , dont mean that I do that at all.
“like windows has 65% of the desktop”
Yes , its the accurate number for October 13 2005.
“and 10% of the server market”
Again the exact number.
“then you’re just a basketcase.”
then you’re just anonymous.
Could some mod please delete all of the posts in this topic (including this one), so we’d start it all over again? The discussion has gone way beyond off-topic.
Talk about Mandriva, dammit.
I’ve too have always liked and used Mandrake among other distro’s but now that SuSE is open and free to download I’ll will use it. It is simply the most professional version out there.
Keep in mind that Mandriva’s OPEN and FREE to download. The important difference between Mandriva and SuSE is simply that:
* You can get the SuSE .iso’s for FREE “immeadiately”.
* You can get the Mandriva .iso’s for FREE “after a few weeks”.
As you can see, there’s very little difference between the two – in addition, you can do a FREE Mandriva netinstall via FTP etc “immeadiately” – so again, the gap between Mandriva and SuSE is very small.
last night i found …/mandriva/official/2006.0… and did a urpmi.removemedia and a urpmi.addmedia and a “urpmi –auto-select” and whala! over 600 upgrades and i have 2006 on the think pad.
everythng went well so far. need to take it to PANERA and see if the wifi still works.
thanks to whoever decided to replace that starry eyed stoned out penguin to the more noble looking bird. I am refering to the boot up background image.
now I need to attend to that breezy.iso download and install a vanilla ubuntu on the HP PC. the breezy i had finally broke when i upgraded the kernel earlier this week, after months of daily using apt-get and synaptic. I was really looking forward to an unvarnished record there.

I don’t know where you got the spelling “whala” from but it’s incorrect; voila is the actual spelling, the word is french. I’ve seen this mistake only twice on the internet and it’s actually quite irritating, although if you don’t have a background in french I can see how you might make that mistake.
heh, I knew a guy who insisted on saying ‘viola’…
Which means ‘raped’, your friend is wierd…
hehehe.
thanks for the correction. my great grandpa came from France during the American civil war, but I know no French.
This is what I found so far , most of the text is copy paste.

I tried this Linux distribution back when it was called Mandrake, but the RPM based package management really put me off. Upgrading Mandrake (following the instructions) messed up the OS beyond my ability to fix it. Installing quite a few RPM apps failed for no apparent reason when using the graphical tools. Along with lack of support for some of my hardware and hassle with config files, that’s what pushed me back to Windows for the last couple of years.
I’ve been considering giving Linux another try in a year or two, but I’m not going to bother if that kind of problem still exists.
That was true, and some part of it is still correct. The big change is that almost every issue you can get upgrading this Mandriva was documented clearly enough.

I had a very similar experience with Window XP. I installed XP Service Pack 2 and the result was a completely unusable system where about half of the installed programs would no longer launch.
“I REALLY don’t accept the charge that this is bad PR.”
No, but
“Yes. It’s so incredibly difficult, you have to – are you ready for the shock? – go to the Mandriva store: http://store.mandriva.com – and then click on each version, and read about what’s in it.
Wow. That was tough. ”
certainly is.
true. but sometimes the OS News trolling gets me a little frustrated. Seems every thread about Mandriva here, ever, is full of low-quality comments.
Oh, and posting here isn’t my job. I post here because I have done for a long time (since before I worked for MDV), and I’m clear about who I work for because I think you should declare your interests. But it’s nothing I’m paid to do.
Well enough Adam. I do understand how hard it can often be to keep an upbeat tone while you feel as though others are beating upon you (or at least beating upon Mandriva), but I do believe that while others want to take it in a downward spiral, it’s up to us to be sure that our comments don’t add to that. 🙂
BTW, although I think there are some issues remaining with the 2006 release (mostly X related), all in all I believe it to be a stellar release. Those who had tried Mandriva in the past and decided to leave for one reason or another, would be doing themselves a favor to give it a try once again IMHO.
