“Ever wonder how virtualization works? Where is it used? What role could virtualization play in the future of Windows, for example? How will it evolve over time? We recently met with some of the Microsoft Virtualization people to find some answers to these questions and learn a whole lot about virtualization, hypervisor, and the future of this super cool and important technology.”
I don’t see Scoble on there, maybe I won’t have to listen to his obnoxious laughing!
Seriously though, these Going Deep videos have largely rocked so far.
This video gives a decent summary of basic hardware virtualization principles from an OS standpoint. It might be a bit on the long side, but if you aren’t quite sure what virtualization is or what some its uses might be, the discussion is pretty easy to follow and touches on just about everything. It is somewhat specific to the MS approach, but most points are widely applicable.
One of the things that I found interesting was when they said that they aren’t taking the approach of using virtualization as a patch to cover up past sins/mistakes. Virtualization can be used as a band-aid for some issues. Instead they’re leveraging virtualization technology and theory to improve both the hypervisor as well as the Windows kernel.
