Early in 2006 mobile operators around the world will begin offering a new enhancement for use with Microsoft Windows Mobile devices (such as the O2 Xda Exec or Xda Mini S), called Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP). Of course, if push e-mail on mobile is not your thing, you might be wondering what the fuss is about. More at GeekZone.
I’ve seen this term come up a number of times the past days. What is the difference with pop mail?
“push” is not a protocol liko POP (i.e. post office protocol)
Push means that as soon as the email comes into your mailbox (in the mailserver) the server basically says “hey! go to THIS device right away!” – so you get your emails automatically on your device without having to do anything extra.
with pop you need to click/tap on “get mail” to actually initiate the communication with the server to get your email
Microsoft is working hard to offer the same feature that you can have on a blackberry. The cool thing is that your PDA/SmartPhone will be able to work “for free” like a blackberry in every “free” wifi hotspot.
This will lower the cost of sending and receiving e-mail and surfing the web.
Blackberry is a very cool tool, but it’s too costly for most users.
