Intel has decided to borrow the sequential naming scheme it used for its famous Pentium brand and apply it to the new Core line of chips, the company is expected to announce Sunday. Earlier this year, Intel released the Core Duo processor, and in a few months it will unveil Core 2 Duo processors. The Core 2 Duo name will be used for desktop chips based on the Conroe chip, as well as for notebook chips based on the Merom chip. Merom processors consume less power than Conroe chips, but they’re otherwise very similar.
Core 2 Duo? Redundant sounding, and midly confusing, since “2” and “Duo” mean the same thing. It’s not clear what’s referring to what. Can we then expect a Core 3 Duo? A Core 4 Solo? Horrible idea. It confuses the number of cores with the generation. And it sounds awful.
This coming from the same company where:
Pentium D – Pentium 4 Dual Core
Celeron D – Celeron single Prescott core
and “Viiv”??, so it’s not really a secret anymore that the intel marketing department probably met south park’s towelie, and are all high =)
You might want to translate “viiv” as “64”, from Roman number vi and iv.
But from what I’ve understood from Intel’s marketing team, that’s not what it means.
I agree, it is a very poor name. Also when you say it, it sounds like you’re saying “Core to Duo” making it sound like some sort of upgrade chip.
Maybe….
Core v2 Solo
Core v2 Duo
Core v2 Quo
Core v3 Solo
Core v3 Duo
Core v3 Quo
It does sound awful. I would have hoped that Intel would have made this a silent (i.e., no change in name) upgrade, as Core Duos have only been around a short time (and only in laptops and the iMac).
Just tacking on the model number should be enough.
Core 2 Duo isn’t really any more confusing or less meaningful than naming like “Pentium D820”, but I’d still expect something a little less daft and redundant sounding.
Huh? : |…You don’t know that a D820 has 2×1 Level 2 cache, a clock speed of 2.8 GHz, and a front side bus of 800MHz :p. I completely agree with you though. As I recall Intel decided to start naming their processors ridiculuos to “help” consumers. To that, 1 point for you sir. I’m looking forward to my next Gateway with it’s Intel Core 2 Duo D8324245 Extreme Edition .
I’d score your comment higher if I could.
They’re just horrible names period. ‘Core Duo’ – it sounds awful. Put Core Duo together with ‘Macbook Pro’ and you have something that just makes you say “Yuck!”
Mind you, AMD seem to have named some of their chips after brands of condoms……
Looking forwards to the new core chips. I’m using a Imac (Core duo) and it speed is a comparable with a Pentium D820* but with out the heat (and subsequent noise of the cooling)
*When processing SETI@Home data
…So when the new Intel based PowerMac’s are announced…
1: “Power” will be removed from PowerMac.
and..
2: It will have two, dual core, Core 2 Duo processors.
oh sweet jesus that’s a mouthful.
Wait until the noobs get a load of that.
What else can be said. Intel is giving ATI a run for their money.
Why don’t they just stick to the codenames? Intel’s codenames appear to sound much better. I like Merom and Woodcrest. They have a powerful ring to them.
They probably couldn’t trademark them.
Why don’t they just stick to the codenames?
Because they’re geographical names that can’t be trademarked. That’s of course why they’re used for code names in the first place: to avoid potential clashes with other companies’ trademarks.
why not take a hint from hollywood and do what they do with the movies.
“the Core” (first incarnation)
“return of the Core” (second incarnation)
“the revenge of Core” (third incarnation)
“i still remember what Core did last summer” (fourth in carnation
“I still remember the release of Core the summer before last” (you get the point)
after all this is on the same level of stupid as the naming scheme they actualy picked. i wonder how far this one got before they decided there euquily stupid idea should be the one they go with.
Core Duo II: The Wrath of Core Duo
I thought the reason they went with the core duo name was to simplify things. By adding the 2 in there they are putting the new name right back into the same position it was before. It is like they hired a marketing company to fix their branding, took this company’s advise as a one time change then handed everything back to the old marketing guys.
What is so bad about calling the new processor core duo as well. They already have numbers associated with the processors to differentiate different speeds, just increase those. If they really want to change something change the duo. Adding extra stuff to the name does not work. A good name should not be more than two words.

Because people who don’t follow geek news would think that it’s just more of the same, even though the Core microarchitecture is a big step forward compared to Yonah, bringing 64-bit mode, SSE4, and a wider and more clever (and thus faster) execution core.
Intel marketing’s mistake here was to give the “Core” name to Yonah, even though “Pentium M2” or something like that would have been much more appropriate.
Core 2 Duo Extreme Edition
has anyone done any comparisons between amd 64 x2 vs pentium m dual core in terms of video encoding? they usually only test desktop vs desktop, not desktop vs laptop. thanks in advance.
Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
If we follow the Pentium brand scheme, shouldn’t it be
Core Duo 2
Core Duo 3
Core Duo 4?
Why would they put the # in the middle? “Core Duo” is the brand name so the version number should be at the end or something.
I guess Intel has not been making sense since the Pentium name (and then Viiv, etc)
Core is the brand name, duo and solo are model numbers for dual and single core respectively. The branding makes sense, it just makes you wonder how the hell so many high paid marketing gurus let it get past.
Oh, I know… because they’re overpaid morons.
Pentium 7D?
Deliver performance, low consumption and quiet cooling, and i will be happy.
Hmmm. Interesting. Why not The Core Reloaded (Conroe, Merom, Woodcrest), The Core Revolutions (Core 3 Duo dekstop, Core 3 Duo Mobile, Core 3 Duo Server)? But what next? Well, Mr.Anderson, I don’t know actually…
…I don’t really give a damn what it’s called, as long as the CPU performs as it should, all without turning the room into a furnace.
