Xandros announced today the release date for its first-generation Linux desktop product, Xandros Desktop 1.0. The product, due to be released on September 30, 2002 and available for purchase within three weeks after that date, is built upon Linux kernel 2.4.19, XFree86 4.2, Debian 3.0, Corel LINUX 3.0, and enhanced KDE. It features the Xandros Install Express, Xandros File Manager, and extensive configuration panels and wizards. Xandros Desktop 1.0 also includes Xandros Networks – an application that enables users to obtain feature enhancements, bug fixes, and the latest Xandros news via a single mouse click. Read the rest of the press release here. Our two previous interviews with Xandros VP Michael Bego, filled with more information, can be found here and here.
“The product, due to be released on September 30, 2002 and available for purchase within three weeks after that date.”
What does “released” mean if one cannot purchase it? Maybe they should say “available for download” or something like that.
“Xandros, a leading developer of a cost effective, installation-friendly, complete Linux-based operating environment.”
So they are a leading developer without even having a product? They are cost effective without having a product for sale?
“the first Linux desktop that is truly user friendly”
Sure. It is not (much) more user friendly than Lycoris.
“provides compatibility with multiple types of hardware”
I sure hope so.
This sounds so much like marketing speech. I hope they will be able to deliver on their promises. From what I have seen so far, their product is not that great. Pending any changes since their last beta I don’t think it is that great looking either.
what other practical applications does this have? The list seems rather small. Somebody clue me in please, thanks.
“So they are a leading developer without even having a product? They are cost effective without having a product for sale?”[i]
Linodws is based on Xandros, so they do have a product out. Cost effective is something that will be determined in about a year.
[i]”This sounds so much like marketing speech.”
Press releases usually do. You are sort of shooting the messenger.
provides compatibility with multiple types of hardware
<sarcasm>
Well, duh. A OS cant run unless it’s compatilbe with a range of types of hardware (motherboards, harddrives, cpus… etc etc)
</sarcasm>
Okay, so thats not what they meant. Still, what about Xandros is new? Other companies are making distros with there own prefrencens panels, file managers, and so on. Does Xandros bring any thing really new into the OS that you cant find in any oth Linux distro?
(yeah, i’m in a cynical/sarcastic mood.)
I guess that’s the day they are going to present the OS “in society”, ’cause there haven’t been any previews yet (beta testings with NDAs don’t count). I’m afraid they can’t do miracles to the interface in two months, but I’m sure they can improve the KDE disaster that was shown here.
In the past months, starting on past January, I have been losing all faith in Xandros, two releases delayed, complete silence, and a recent KDE desktop screenshot that could make you burst into tears. Thanksfully Red Hat and Sun are looking at the Linux desktop, Red Hat8 promises to be the Linux desktop 800pound gorilla, and we are all eager to see what is Sun to deliver.
Since I’ve lost almost all interest on Xandros and focused lately on using RedHat-Limbo/GNOME2 as my Linux desk, I do not want to get sarcastic over Xandros, neither now nor on sept30, I sure want to see that presentation, I hope they do fine.
Ano Nymous: What does “released” mean if one cannot purchase it? Maybe they should say “available for download” or something like that.
Xandros isn’t the only one that releases the product on download first, then on boxes a few weeks later. Mandrake, Red Hat and a few others does that too.
“Release” doesn’t mean it must come in a box set.
Ano Nymous: Sure. It is not (much) more user friendly than Lycoris. [/i
I wonder, when did you do the comparison…. and how? After all, Xandros isn’t released YET.
Albino: [i]what other practical applications does this have? The list seems rather small. Somebody clue me in please, thanks.
Xandros doesn’t have 5 terminal emulators, 6 text editors, 11 window managers etc. In other words, it is just the kernel plus the GNU stuff, then plus XFree and plus its enchance KDE, and some of its tools and a “small” office *suite*. (I highlighted the word “suite” because I don’t think Gobe would be bundled).
It also comes with GNOME as an optional thingy.
Other companies are making distros with there own prefrencens panels, file managers, and so on.
Other companies add on to Konqueror or Nautilus, not have their own file manager (which is CFM ported to KDE 2 or 3).
m: I’m afraid they can’t do miracles to the interface in two months, but I’m sure they can improve the KDE disaster that was shown here.
How sure are you they aren’t on it already? Besides, what you have seen is a small screenshot of an beta. You only know how it looks. Perhaps Xandros would change the UGLY icons and UGLY window decoration by release date.
m: Red Hat8 promises to be the Linux desktop 800pound gorilla, and we are all eager to see what is Sun to deliver.
Sun’s Linux for their workstation, if they use Linux for their workstations would be the same as Red Hat, relatively. Ximian is doing their GNOME interface for them.
Besides, I don’t understand. How can Red Hat be a 800 pound gorrila when it haven’t got its act together? Sure, Limbo 2 is very nice, but only if a Linux geek helps someone to install it and install the apps the user wants to use. Installing apps, especially, after installation isn’t the easiest thing on earth. Installation too isn’t the easiest among the distros I have used.
I like the Win 98 look. Nice and clean. Xandros looks like it. I look forward to trying it out.
Considering this distro has been in development since the last ice age, it had better be good!
Which version of KDE did they enhanced? 3.x or 2.x?

What is Xandros Desktop based on?
Xandros Desktop is based on the Debian (Woody) distribution. The graphic desktop environment is created by an enhanced version of KDE 2.2.2.

That’s what the FAQ says, maybe a beta tester could confirm it, or is that in the NDA too?
