Motorola’s PowerPC 8500 – aka the G5 – continues to move steadily toward its scheduled release, TheRegister reports. The G5 is the next major version of the PowerPC architecture and includes a new internal bus structure, a longer, ten-stage instruction pipeline, redesigned integer and floating-point maths units. It will be offered in 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and fabbed using silicon-on-insulator technology at 0.13 micron. Check out the SPEC CPU benchmarks which show that the G5 outperforms the current versions of Pentium 4, by a large margin.
since Intel has effectively co-opted every other kick-ass hardware platform ( Alpha, PA-RISC) and pretty much smokes the UltraSparc in smaller configurations,
what hope does the PowerPC platform have? I’d thought of buying one, especially since the advent of OS X but x86 remains THE platform for the enthusiast.
Yes, but P4 sucks. They should be comparing to Athlon. Apple is afraid of AMD, which outperforms G4 in its own “benchmarks”, like photoshop. AMD’s Sledgehammer will kick the G5’s ass.
can’t wait to see the pricetag Apple puts on that thing…and then laugh very, very loud.
I thought Apple went the way of the Commodore Amiga. Oh well I guess people really do need a fast CPU and easy to use computer
That´s the question. Have they seen the tools on the G4? iDVD, iMovie, Quark XPress, ProTools, Digital Performer anmd Final Cut Pro 2.0. Do I need to say more? Inn what way will these get worse on a G5? What do the other platforms have to compete and to what price?
