It is always cool seeing less popular operating systems to be endorsed by the media. Linux has been mentioned or shown in quite a few movies so far, but this is BeOS’ turn to be briefly shown on a new, independant movie, titled “Apartment Story“. The movie was produced by The General Coffee Company Film Productions, who by the way, also do… software (mostly for BeOS). Check out the trailer and watch the brief BeOS scene.
im only getting a 1k download rate (we have 3 t1s running into this building, none under heavy load)
i didnt see this on slashdot either :/
OSNews is big enough these days to “eat up” all the bandwidth of a site, especially when linking to big files, like these trailers. Five minutes before putting that story up, their videos were flying for me, but now, it seems that they have been somewhat osnews’ed.
it has a single burst of traffic, then nothing, then it times out, then the download manager auto resumes, another single burst, etc…
at this rate i will be able to enjoy it by sunday or monday :
This behavior, of data surge, followed by a backoff is why WRED is a “Good Thing”. It’s a result of tail drop on TCP traffic causing session to back off. This opens up enough bandwidth for the TCP sliding window to open back up, resulting in another surge, and it just cycles.
(Kinda off topic)

Since I won’t be able to watch this trailer in the relatively near future, could some kindred soul please tell me what is on it?
.
OK, getting excited about seeing an operating system in a movie is definitely geeky. 😉

Yeah, it only takes about 20 people to hose one of those home DSL lines, sorry

I am a geek. My husband loves me for this.

I am a geek. My wife loves me for this.
lol
i wish i could find a decent geek chick
last one i dated turned out to be a psychotic lying slut
Wondering why you’re posting this now? This was news from a L-O-N-G time ago – is there more to the story? Is the movie making the rounds or something?
Because I just saw it, and the only dates on their website reffer to November and 2002 (http://161.184.245.22/tessman/gcc/apartmentstory/index.html).

LOL.. Did you mean a decent greek chick? :^D
JBQ and Eugenia, nice to see such a nicely matched couple .
BeOS received mention in the novel ‘Cryptonomicon’ by Neal Stephenson 🙂 (which is a GREAT geek book)
this news is what, one year old? hmm. I think even older.
anyway, it’s good to see an actual OS being used in a movie every once in a while, in addition to those HollywoodOS’s they usually have.
Wasn’t BeIA used in some movie once btw?
Also, TGCCFP hasn’t updated their macromedia-player for BeOS in a while, due to expensing licensing and such. If you’d like to see it continued, there’s more info over here http://news.begroovy.com/comments/372
I am a geek.
My wife loves me for this.
I wasted my entire single life never finding a woman that could dig an EE & SW guy, (double geek) either, not in UK or US but in Taiwan I found my perfect mate (match.com) who wouldn’t consider anyone that isn’t an engineer. This is quite common in Asian countries, education is key to prosperity & therefore better partner.
good luck single guys
I also getting 1 k/s.
I don’t remember BeOS being in Cryptonomicon. Which bit?
BeIA was used in the movie The Sixth Day with Arnold Schwarzenegger – it was embedded in the fridge that gave some vital information to the bad guys.
I was getting tired on Malaysian movies. They either put a Mac OS 9 screen on a HP (one of them with an obvious HP logo) or on a Mac (mostly iMacs) with a Windows 98/Me screen. 🙂
Maybe now in hollywood hacker movies we woudl see them using BeOS instead of Mac OS 9 for hacking. And probably they would stop using 3D animations and nice GUI messages while hacking…
who knows?
I se the Workspaces app there and some icons… Nice.
Choose the new name of BeOS here:

How did you manage to create such list from where i cannot find any outstanding name?
Avoiding vote this time:(
I find it a bit funny that we can see a trailor about an OS, but can’t watch it with that OS due to the fact that the media type isn’t supported. hehe
Might sound silly, but did anyone consider placing information about the names? Things like the meaning, language of origin, etc.?
BeOS has been able to play nearly ever AVI that I’ve thrown at it. I haven’t tried the trailer, but I’d be surprised if it didn’t work.
“I am a geek. My wife loves me for this. ”
I am a geek. My girlfriend loves me for this… even though she is more interested in clothes and makeup than computers… and I love her for that.
BeOS appears a few times in the novel. It’s one of the OSes one of the characters (Avi?) uses on his laptop or PC.. Along with NT I think.
Having an OS highlighted in a movie might be a bad idea. Did anyone here see Mission to Mars (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0183523). It was horrible. The audience I saw it with laughed loudest at the most “tragic” part. SGI showcased their new logo in the movie. It was in the corner of the fancy cpmuter displays that all the characters were using. I’m guessing that the terrible FX were also done on SGI. The alien was so poorly rendered that they should have used stop-motion and Play-Doh instead. I’ve always thought that this is why SGI tanked for a while.

Humm … interesting.
That is interesting….does it install like the old PE did- from windows?
We may have a winner here, folks….
Nice screenies: http://vasper.net/beosScreenShots.htm
It’s great!
The Linux movie did several brazilians to watch it.
I wait that several brazilians watch this BeOS movie too
About my love:
I’m a geek too. My girlfriend, Maila, loves me too. And I love her… to much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maila, I love you!!!

You guys are forgetting the C: in the matrix.
I don’t remember BeOS being in Cryptonomicon. Which bit?
At some point in the novel, someone asks Randy Waterhouse what OSes he has on his computer and he says something along the lines of:
“UNIX for hacking, BeOS for media stuff, and WindowsNT for playing games or when some lamer needs to use my computer.”
Sums it up nicely, I think =)
Go Go Go!
C’mon PalmSource release BeOS!
ciao

mate you really need to get some tranqs or some heavy medicine for those delusions you keep having..
j/k
sweet to see another Os make it to the bigscreen.
