“Microsoft, the world’s largest software maker, began arguing its U.S. trade case that Android-based smartphones made by Motorola Mobility Holdings use technology derived from Microsoft inventions.
In a trial that began today before the International Trade Commission in Washington, Microsoft accused Motorola Mobility of infringing seven of its patents and requested a halt to imports of certain Motorola phones. The ITC has the power to stop imports of products that violate U.S. patent rights.” Hey at least these patent trolls ensure we got stuff to write about.
Story has no links at all.

Better this way ? (Just put the words in a search engine, don’t know if this was the actual original article)

Hehe. That was expected. Time for Google to strike those brazen racketeers hard.
Isn’t it Android who infringing on the patents? Couldn’t Motorola simply import the hardware without Android than install it on the phone in the USA?
Not hard to find at all:

Now please resume with your insightful Microsoft/Apple/Oracle conspiracies.
‘Conspiracy’ is a very popular straw man argument word. Modern people are too selfish and stupid for conspiracies, or are they? Recent events in Egypt and Lybia cast some doubts on that.
it’s hard to deny, that there is a lot of “The Godfather” style collusions or simple market divisions in corporate America.
For big corporation there is always a strong temptation to behave like a big street gang, suppressing competitors with robbery and bribes.
It happens in small businesses too, especially ones that compete directly with one another. Corporations are in fact bound by far more stringent laws than small business in most countries and are subject to a much higher degree of scrutiny.
Make no mistake, your preferred “Mom ‘n Pop” cornerstore would fight tooth and nail to protect their business from a competitor that opened in their neighbourhood. It’s their livelihood, and people have always fought for their livelihoods in whatever way they are permitted or can get away with.
Looks like Motorola don’t want to give “protection money” to MS anymore…
Actually, I think Motorola was one of the few that didn’t. I guess Microsoft didn’t want to start a patent war with Motorola.
So, I guess, now that Motorola Mobility has been removed from the rest of Motorola and sold to Google they think they can attack Motorola Mobility.
As much as I despise the patent system in the US, I think the only way to get the attention of congress to put a stop this legalized extortion is for more companies to abuse their patent rights.
Or just keep bitching about it on tech blogs, like Thom does, and hope that some congressman logs in one day and finally sees the light.
WorknMan,
“Or just keep bitching about it on tech blogs, like Thom does, and hope that some congressman logs in one day and finally sees the light.”
I do think it’s important to keep the issue in the spotlight, even though the topic is repetitive.
Attacks on freedom is not something to take lightly. If we ignore the battles we will loose the war.
Do you know what the definition of insanity is? If not, let me Google it for you:
http://tinyurl.com/3yeu9wt
So, what does that say about tech bloggers who keep posting the same patent bullshit over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and again, expecting anything to change?
I mean, who exactly needs to see the ‘software patents are broken’ rant who hasn’t already seen it 900 f**king times already? But hey, if you enjoy pissing into the wind, can’t people at LEAST wait until there’s a patent lawsuit where a VERDICT has actually been reached before feeling like they have to post about it, then perhaps there might be a reason to care …

WorknMan,
If that’s how you feel, then why bother reading these patent threads? Where is the problem?
Oh, you know… I figure if some of us do enough bitching about all these patent articles, maybe it might actually inspire Thom and his ilk to post a lot less of them, just like how bloggers keep thinking that telling us about every finger gesture patent lawsuit that comes up might actually result in less patents.
See my previous definition of insanity
You mean all three of you and the numerous mrshasbeen clones? Why do you come here just to bitch about the articles? You can… I don’t know… just ignore them? Maybe? You know, I have zero interest in Haiku news, and I don’t go trolling Haiku threads. You could do the same.
Patents are hot news because this is what is happening right now in this market segment (mobile/software) and it may have a dramatic affect on the future of innovation and consumer choice. Convince Apple, MS, Oracle, etc to stop this nonsense of patenting ideas and concepts, and voila, patent news will disappear.
Maybe it is “person who continue to read articles that do not interest him and then continue to bitch about how uninteresting those articles are”.
Sounds about right: insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting to get different results.
Well, since Thom isn’t an american citizen he can’t really write his senator or something.
Congress is already talking about it, but they’re all on the corporate payroll anyway. Fire all of them, start from scratch and maybe we’d actually get some problems fixed.
Finally we are going to see court case between MS & Google… a long match that was sure to happen one day. Go on guys you fight it out and we will watch the fun… Thanks for Americas broken patent system.
Yeah, about some time for MS to get serious beating. So far they only tried to suck money from weak opponents.
I woudn’t exactly call Samsung “weak”…

It looks like our plan is succeeding. Not only have our combined efforts managed to push Google into a situation where they’re competing with their own OEMs (making Android even less attractive), but now we also have Motorola as a perfect avenue to go after Google directly without actually having to go after them directly.
Now we just have to keep putting money and marketing behind WP7 and, in a few years, it will start to displace Android just by attrition alone. Not that this was our plan all along… oh well, shucks, you caught me, actually it was our plan all along (sheepish grin goes here). Really now, did you honestly think that this relationship was for your benefit?
But hey, I’m a nice guy. If you play along, I’ll let you keep a comfortable little niche (just like we did back in the late 90s). All you have to do is make Bing & other Microsoft services the default for everything in iOS. Otherwise? Well, after we’re done with Android, who do you think is next on the list?
Yours in duopoly,
Steve
I really doubt this is the style of email writing of Steve Ballmer.
There has to be atleast some more exclamation marks.
Probably with a signature attached with:
Developers ! Developers ! Developers !
So probably something like, “Curse you, Google!!! I’ll destroy Android if it’s the last thing I ever do!!!!! MuHaHaHaHa!!!!!!!!! “
You could always write about the future of computing like in the good old days.
You should sell OSNews.com and change the name patentnews.com.
]{
If excessive patenting wins, computing as we know it has no future.
It will in effect legitimate a few big companies, and crush all minors actors. Competition will thus end.
Or the most innovative companies will leave the US market.
Well, Apple just showed that EU companies are not totally immune to patent craziness.
Mirosoft Spokesjoker: “… Windows Phone 7, which competes with Android and Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone.”
WP7 might be in the market but I doubly doubt it’s competing with anything else right now except it’s own inertial mass…

What exactly do they consider to be Microsoft inventions?
I see “7 patents” but which 7?
