Isn’t it Android who infringing on the patents? Couldn’t Motorola simply import the hardware without Android than install it on the phone in the USA?

‘Conspiracy’ is a very popular straw man argument word. Modern people are too selfish and stupid for conspiracies, or are they? Recent events in Egypt and Lybia cast some doubts on that.
it’s hard to deny, that there is a lot of “The Godfather” style collusions or simple market divisions in corporate America.
For big corporation there is always a strong temptation to behave like a big street gang, suppressing competitors with robbery and bribes.
It happens in small businesses too, especially ones that compete directly with one another. Corporations are in fact bound by far more stringent laws than small business in most countries and are subject to a much higher degree of scrutiny.
Make no mistake, your preferred “Mom ‘n Pop” cornerstore would fight tooth and nail to protect their business from a competitor that opened in their neighbourhood. It’s their livelihood, and people have always fought for their livelihoods in whatever way they are permitted or can get away with.
Looks like Motorola don’t want to give “protection money” to MS anymore…
Actually, I think Motorola was one of the few that didn’t. I guess Microsoft didn’t want to start a patent war with Motorola.
So, I guess, now that Motorola Mobility has been removed from the rest of Motorola and sold to Google they think they can attack Motorola Mobility.
As much as I despise the patent system in the US, I think the only way to get the attention of congress to put a stop this legalized extortion is for more companies to abuse their patent rights.
Or just keep bitching about it on tech blogs, like Thom does, and hope that some congressman logs in one day and finally sees the light.

I do think it’s important to keep the issue in the spotlight, even though the topic is repetitive.

Oh, you know… I figure if some of us do enough bitching about all these patent articles, maybe it might actually inspire Thom and his ilk to post a lot less of them, just like how bloggers keep thinking that telling us about every finger gesture patent lawsuit that comes up might actually result in less patents.

Patents are hot news because this is what is happening right now in this market segment (mobile/software) and it may have a dramatic affect on the future of innovation and consumer choice. Convince Apple, MS, Oracle, etc to stop this nonsense of patenting ideas and concepts, and voila, patent news will disappear.
Maybe it is “person who continue to read articles that do not interest him and then continue to bitch about how uninteresting those articles are”.

It looks like our plan is succeeding. Not only have our combined efforts managed to push Google into a situation where they’re competing with their own OEMs (making Android even less attractive), but now we also have Motorola as a perfect avenue to go after Google directly without actually having to go after them directly.
Now we just have to keep putting money and marketing behind WP7 and, in a few years, it will start to displace Android just by attrition alone. Not that this was our plan all along… oh well, shucks, you caught me, actually it was our plan all along (sheepish grin goes here). Really now, did you honestly think that this relationship was for your benefit?
But hey, I’m a nice guy. If you play along, I’ll let you keep a comfortable little niche (just like we did back in the late 90s). All you have to do is make Bing & other Microsoft services the default for everything in iOS. Otherwise? Well, after we’re done with Android, who do you think is next on the list?

If excessive patenting wins, computing as we know it has no future.
It will in effect legitimate a few big companies, and crush all minors actors. Competition will thus end.
Or the most innovative companies will leave the US market.
Well, Apple just showed that EU companies are not totally immune to patent craziness.
