Apple has released Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (by far Apple’s most inelegant product name). It’s a whole bunch of under-the-hood stuff, mostly bug fixes. It adds support for Catalan, Croatian, Greek, Hebrew, Romanian, Slovak, Thai, and Ukrainian. It’s all in Software Update.
Yes, why do people use animal names. It would seem very backward to admire animals, and knowing they can be fierce predators, and lustfollowers.
There may be a point to this of esoteric value though.
As we know Steve Jobs was a fan of LSD, and never went back on giving LSD a status as one of the most siginicant experiences of his life, and the company name “apple” and logo shows an apple with a bite having been taken.
That is a referance to the tree of eternity in the Bible, and the Quran.
Psychoactive mushrooms, often grow near pine trees, and can be seen as fallen fruit from the tree.
That of naming things, or even people according to animals, one also sees among native americans, due to shamanic practises.
And a point of (rather great) esoteric value, is that the shaman (which LSD users really mimick), gains insight into the divine nature of the beast, and such gain great respect for it.
Because that divine nature, is yourself.
And thus, the name of “Lion” may be related to that, but I cannot say that for sure ofcourse.
Psychedelic experiences differ from natural mystical experiences in that divinity often presents itself as animal.
And mainly since there is too much negative statistics involved with psychedelics, nobody can really recommend it to anyone. And in Abrahamic religion it was forbidden with Adam. And possibly a preshamanic culture, and even animism before that were covered over, probably because nobody wanted to know about it.
Eternity is the greatest concept, and ofcourse what we know as “God”, or any other equally significant entity.
Also ofcourse in modern times as “the observer creates the universe” of Quantum-mechanics.
Because the outcome of the drug varies greatly, some claim to experience God, and only positive things, while others talk about gods, and worship the mushroom itself as a god, which is kind of fairytale thinking, and at the most extreme, some also kill themselves.
It cannot be recommended for anyone. Eternity is just not something you mess with.
And most popular users show regret, shame and ambivalence related to the drug, and that makes it difficult to face life in a decent society, and life before God, and death itself.
Even so many still use it, and I personally find it to have at times even great esoteric value, although I could never do it myself, simply because I enjoy life with a clean conscience. Once you have purified yourself by living a moral life, these things become absurd.
But art like, for instance in the game, Half Life 2, seems to be inspired by psychedelics. Once you realize that these things are inspired by “the tree of eternity”, AKA eternity itself, you can imagine some breathtaking art. Or “impossible objects that if the world knew, they would go mad”, as Terence McKenna puts it. Eternity is the greatest concept, and one can understand their reverence of animals, if indeed they represent divine eternal nature, to the namer.
Peace!
Sorry, but what drugs are you on? I’ll have two, please!
I never thought I’d see a comment like this on OSNews. Thanks for making my day.
You have overdone it
He was voicing concern about “Apple Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3”, that’s 6 words!!! Way too inelegant as for Apple!
Even if we omit Apple (as obviousness) and 10.7.3 (as technical detail), we have:
“Mac OS X Lion”
Why not “OSX Lion”?
JUST that! In ads, events, press materials….
You mean like they do on their web page? http://www.apple.com/macosx/ :o)
Strange that “Apple Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3” makes such a big deal suddenly when “”Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8” is even longer?!
No one use that name anyway, “osx Lion”, “10.7.3” or similar is used when most people are talking about it.
Animals and psychoactive drugs are two things a admire, (my avatar is a raccoon-shaman).
We must be very different
Peace to you too.

My first instinct was to mod your post as Off Topic, but this is pure comedy gold! For once I read your entire rant and laughed my ass off.
Thanks for reminding me why I’m both straightedge and non-religious.
Have you tried his profile page (and comment page). He have the lowest positive/negative voting average I ever saw on this site.
Uhhhhhh… all I can say to that is:
We know for certain, for instance, for some reason for some time in the beginning there were hot lumps. Cold and lonely, they whirled noiselessly through the black holes of space. These insignificant lumps came together to form the first union: our Sun, the heating system. And about this glowing gasbag rotated the Earth.
We were covered with a molten scum of rock, bobbing on the surface like rats. Later, when there was less heat, these giant rock groups settled down among the land masses. During this extinct time, our earth was like a steam room – and no one, not even man, could get in. However, the oceans and the sewers were simmering with a rich protein stew and the mountains moved in to surround and protect them. They didn’t know then that living, as we know it, was already taken over.
Animals without backbones hid from each other, or fell down. Clambasaurs and oysterettes appeared as appetizers – then came the sponges, which sucked up about 10 percent of all life. Hundreds of years later, in the late Devouring Period, the fish became obnoxious. Trailerbites, Chickerbites, and Mosqwitoes collided aimlessly in the dense gas. Finally, tiny edible plants sprang up in rows – giving birth to generations of insecticides and other small, dying creatures.
Yeah, I would use hot pepper names myself, mostly of the Capsicum chinense species. There’s nothing cooler than a plant whose mean, colorful, tasty fruit can kick almost any human’s or any other animal’s ass, royally (birds being the main exclusion). Including those big cats that Apple seems to love naming their desktop OS after.
Mmmm… I wouldn’t mind having a chocolate habanero, mustard habanero, peach habanero, red and yellow Scotch bonnets, Bhut jolokia, 7 Pod, tabasco pepper, Harold’s St. Barts. Damn it, now I’m hungry…
Wow, how did you manage to get THIS FAR from the original news … ? this is beyond my comprehension, but it sounds like a fundamentalism to me.
People are animals whether you or the authors of bible/quran like it/admit it or not. I am truly outraged everytime someone thinks he/she’s better than everything else. This is so, so humane … egocentrism, anthopocentrism, egoism.
BTW don’t talk like you got the ultimate truths, because there are no ultimate truths, or – at least – not where you are looking for them.
Besides – you sound like an arrogant human being, another “teacher”, another messiah that would like to force his belief system down our throats.
You’ve choosed wrong place to spread your gospel.
PS I have nothing against you as a person. I just don’t like that behaviour.
At least don’t drag serious science into your drivels – you don’t have a clue about quantum mechanics and this one concept associated with it, you just read somewhere and appropriated, effectively, one nice sounding slogan giving you the illusion of association…
I haven’t tried Lion yet because much of the UI changes turn me away. Has it improved at all since the initial release? or are those UI changes still there? I’m happy with 10.6, however it seems all the 10.6 machines I’ve come across have been slowing down to the point of being unusable.
Actually I like a lot the tweaks/enhancements they implemented to the overall UI, and performance/stability/memory usage wise, I do not see anything negative compared to Snow Leopard.
The basic changes are still there however the bugs relating to those changes are being gradually corrected especially when it comes to OpenGL performance. Just having a look through the extensions on my MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac mini and it appears that both GPU drivers, OpenGL and the various graphics frameworks have been updated with some people on forums I frequent noting performance improvements in games etc.
Didn’t Mac OS X already support Greek?
It’s all Greek to me…
My guess is that it wasn’t supported in Lion until this release.
The thing is that I already saw Mac OS X being used in Greek as I go quite often to Greece, hence my question.
My guess is that late language support would be also a fairly reliable indicator which markets Apple considers fairly unimportant, which have low to marginal OSX uptake.
Quickly going through Statcounter stats of places most strongly associated with the added languages seems to confirm it (I’m a bit surprised Israel is low; oh well, long time relative prosperity is not the only factor of Apple adoption …and actually, some classic stereotypes could fit – say, about frugality and general higher thoughtfulness in regard to purchases ;p )
Did they fix the bug that prevented the use of iPads as secondary display on Macs with a GF9400M (like mine)?
Nobody notice that it’s 1.34gb in size?
Or does no one care?
It’ll include the recovery image.
*shrugs* for me I just re-downloaded the latest version off the AppStore and everything worked ok. For me I’m not concerned about the size – heck, Microsoft has had updates that have been pretty big too. Years ago when I had dial up it was a royal PITA when Apple would release an update a few hundred megabytes in size but now with mobile and fixed broadband become pretty common the developed world it isn’t such a hassle after all.
It’s still on the large side.
And… wait, during such Apple updates we sometimes witness some weird celebration – about how few % of internet users, voraciously jumping on large update within a short period of time (probably transmitting an order or two of magnitude more than they do on a typical day), can supposedly still make connection slowish for everybody in some places.
That would definitely make it a problem / you can’t have it both ways.
(or maybe being able to cherish such occasional disturbances is the whole idea behind not trimming update sizes?)
