“Research in Motion has said the native software development kit for Blackberry 10 will be committed to open source. The firm, which has a history of basing its business on being a closed system, is shifting more and more to open source. Its upcoming Blackberry 10 native SDK will include many open source code resources.”
So that’s Symbian, Meego Harmattan and BB10 with support for Qt on mobile.
A Blackberry might just be what I’ve been looking for.
Competition is good and we need this badly.
I just hope it’s not a case of another company jumping on OSS as a last resort to save the sinking ship.
Let’s hope for the best.
The Blackberry native SDK will almost certainly not be Open Source!
However it will contain Open Source components, some (e.g. Qt) even being used as pillars of still proprietary components (e.g. Cascades).
Qt’s position in this is actually quite versatile. Demos shown at BB DevCon suggest that there are at least two UI technologies available on top of Qt: QtQuick and Cascades.
What wasn’t demonstrated but which wouldn’t surprise me if it was available as well, is traditional QtGui on top of Qt. Probably with a Blackberry specific widget style.
