OSNews reader Jess Tipton was very kind to design really nice OSNews background images for various resolutions. Please download only the file that corresponds to your monitor’s resolution (so we can save some bandwidth) from here. Also, please note that users who use older versions of Windows, will need to save these images as .bmp files before they can use them. Additionally, let’s not forget that OSNews always is in search of people who would like to publish their articles on this site.
Nice Work!
Thanks Jess.
=(
nice !
Are you blind?
Wait, which one is GNU/Hurd?
Very cool
Will there be a place created on the site for these so people can see them after they head on to the news archives?
excellent work!!
Excellent work ! Thanks very much Jess…
Sure, all osnews stories are archived and you can search by topic (by clicking the icon you want on a story), by kind (newsbit, editorial, interview, feature) or by clicking the “news archive” from the menu on the left, which sorts all published stories by date.
but it’s not.. (tall enough)
Yuk, you are right… it is 854 instead of 864… I think I did a typo in the email when I asked Jess to do a 1152 version.. 😮
I will try to ask Jess to do it 864 and send it to me, and then I will upload a newer version.
Indeed I took the size from the email sorry every one… I will have to fix this asap…
Can someone name all of the operating systems in order? There’s quite a few here I don’t recognize.
? (OpenB
WindowsXP
SkyOS
Linux
BeOS
TriangleOS
FreeBSD
Mac OS X
Amiga OS
MorphOS
?
QNX
SGI Irix
OpenBSD
Syllable
OS/2 Warp
Ok Eugina should have things fixed up asap – it’s fixed on my site so head on over & snag it there. I guess I should have gotten off my lazy butt to make sure that was the right size before I released it but I’ve never made anythign that size. I’ve allways viewed 1152X864 as one of those “No one uses that crap!” res’s, guess I was damn wrong Sorry for the mix up… Hope you like it
– Jess
MacOS (up to 9), WinXP, SkyOS, Linux, BeOS, TriangleOS, *BSD (or FreeBSD?), MacOS X, AmigaOS, MorphOS, (Don’t know), QNX, SGI IRIS, OpenBSD, Syllable, OS/2 Warp 4 (duh).
That should be almost all of them…but hey, wait a minute, where is VAX, System V (ooh, no icon, I see…) and all the BeOS derivatives…oh, well. I guess Jess didn’t say this was a comprehensive list
I notice alot of people wondering what the OS’s are –
Left to right
Mac OS classic – Windows – SkyOS – Linux – BeOS – TriangleOS – FreeBSD – Mac OSX Jag – Amiga – MorphOS – Solaris – Qnx – Irix – NetBSD – Syllable – OS/2
There are many more OS’s then that but it at least shows there is
choice if you look for it
first one is MacOS Classic (thanks rhix)
Yes, 1152×864 is now fixed, please re-download.
Heh,
see within a few min all is well
Since i have yet to see someone do a complete proper list..
MacOS Classic – Windows XP – SkyOS – Linux – BeOS – TriangleOS – BSD – Mac OSX Jaguar – Amiga – MorphOS – QNX – Irix – OpenBSD – Syllable – OS/2 Warp
Yup, Richard got it right.
I didnt think they were actually using tthat S thing…
I liked the old atheos icon.
Nope, Syllable uses the Syllable icon… I use the AtheOS icon here on osnews when I report on syllable, as I haven’t switched it yet… But Syllable has its own icon.
What about the OpenBeOS fish named Walter?
Richard got it wrong.. he missed Solaris between Morph and QNX..
Great work Jess, i’ll be using it from now on.. and thanks for fixing the 1152×864
I’ve allways viewed 1152X864 as one of those “No one uses that crap!” res’s, guess I was damn wrong
Heh, remember that the MorphOS crowd uses a broad assortment of OSes and hardware, with all the features and limitations that invites.
For example, I uses resolutions such as 896×600 for years, in addition to more “normal” resolutions such as 640×256 and 640×512. And what about my Mac with its portrait screen?
Wouldn’t hurt with 640×400 and 640×480 versions though, for my Atari and such things.
Oh, and I think it’s a shame that poor old RISCOS is left out, now that it’s got a new logo and all.
Great work, Jess!
Good work, Jess. I’ll be using it on my Linux box. =)
I’m going to try to sneak this onto some machines where I work. ;>
It’s things like this, that keep people coming back.
Keep up the good work.
I’m having trouble drumming up info on TriangleOS…any help?
Nice work otherwise…
search osnews with that word

Thats its website.
… and now I do not have scantily/unclad chick on my desktop But, where is the DOS icon? 🙂 DR, PC, or FreeDOS, please Maybe I will learn the GIMP now, hehe. Thanks Jess. Esp. for the OS/2 icon.
Damn…it’s not cause i didnt know it, i guess when going through them i accidentally skipped it. I’m a big fan of solaris’ logo.
? = Solaris
very nice
This is probably too low in the thread to be seen, but good job!
It’s funny every once in a while some one says whre is the “Insert OS logo here” symbol. The original had even less but had “scroll buttons” to indicate there was much more. In the end I was getting worried… I only have so much horizontal space heh. I was thinking of doing a differant design & one that could use more. If you get into the dirty of it there are around 3000+ OS’s. Most of which are learning projects & only have one function at a university but I dunno if there is enough wallpaper *action* out there to fit them ALL in. If I got into all the variants of the major os’s & some of the smaller I could fill the 1600X1200 pretty easy if I kept them all the size they are now… Another problem is some logos suck fo this sorta thing. the OS/2 logo was le b1tc]-[ to pull off & I think it looks sorta poopy. Syllable was hard to. mainly cuz everything is matted to a white background. Takes a lot of sneaky clean up work but as long as ya like it
Nice job!
How could you guys miss this?! (kidding..)

Well, the square face is still used in OS X, it is IIRC on the box and used as an icon to the Finder…. why are there two icons? no fair.
Hey man, where the heck have you been? If you’re still reading the thread, mail me: daat at beosjournal dot org

There are other OS/2 logos, such as the one inside a circle. That might be better suited for these purposes.
(Yes, I agree that the “wavy” logo of OS/2 isn’t the prettiest out there.)
