A reader over at Slashdot noted that the folks making Debian GNU/Hurd have released a new snapshot in 4 CD images. This is up from three CDs in the G1 release we noted in October, although only the first CD is required to install a basic system.

Really, it is, I’m quite amazed. Format a partition and set ownership to hurd (mke2fs -o hurd /dev/hd..), mount it, copy the 3 scripts and launch ./cross-install, vlam bam boom you have it… quite nice )
Now, even though the installation is pretty easy, there is one major down side with the current release, there is no PPP support in there, at least none that I could find. My 2 NIC were supported (3c905B and Rhine) but since I run internet from adsl, I need to get rp-pppoe or some equivalent going.. They didn’t have it.
I also had some trouble with the /boot/servers.boot script, seems like it is in an invalid file format, anybody else got that error?
All in all, I’m nicely impressed by the ease of installation, but deceived by the incompleteness, keep it up guys, you’ll have it someday
