MacMinute reports that according to BusinessWeek’s Corporate Scoreboard, Apple reported the largest profit increase of all tech companies in 2003. Apple saw a 552% jump in annual profits to $137 M.
A company could be losing money last year and making money this year. What percentage increase is that? How about if they were barely break even last year (say profit of $1) and then makes $20M this year. That would be a 2000000000% increase. So … ?
Percentage increase in *revenue* is interesting. Percentage increase in profit isn’t.
I agree that a percantage is pretty useless without other info (I have seen the other Apple numbers so I realize what that percantage means), but the thing I find funny is that if Steve Jobs went back to his $1 a year salary, those profit numbers would almost triple. He is the highest paid CEO in the world.
it is meaningful considering that only two computer manufacturing companies posted continuous profits during this recession – dell and apple.
apple was turning mediocre-to-ok profits that were consistently better than any other computer manufacturing company out there except dell…
all this means is that their situation got alot better last year…
several reasons include a) powerbook sales thru the roof [as seen across the board in all computer manufacturing companies], b) pent up mac g5 sales went thru the roof, and c) ipod sales not only shifted focus within the company but provided less hardware sale dependency…
:O oooops… :O i forgot something… apple is dying… since 1976(?)….. …
Percentage increase in *revenue* is interesting. Percentage increase in profit isn’t.
Bullcrap. What it demostrates is Apple controlling costs. Just look at the dot-cons, “WOW! 30000% increase in revenues and still can’t turn a bloody profit!”, yeah, love your logic.
If the revenue is growing, profits are maintainable and they give nice dividends per-quarter AND their shareprice is a TRUE representation of the value of the company, then there is nothing wrong with it.
Apple has growing revenues, controlling costs, and maintaining and growing the niche areas where they can compete. They certainly don’t need fancy-free, grandiose ideas, that is what lead them into losing money many moons ago; loosing sight of the bigger picture by chosing to bash Microsoft rather than developing better products.
Have you all lost your mind? Profit is king and anything else just muddies the water. Apple is kicking some butt, but please do not be jealous. Remember everyone, you get what you pay for! You want to pay $300 for your cheapie PC from CompUSA, but please do not complain on this site about your experience. Save a few bucks and get yourself something that holds it value, something that won the best OS of the year for 2003 and is simply beautiful, a Mac!

You and your buddies that have drank the Jobs kool-aid can keep on saying that, but nobody believes it. It’s all made in Taiwan.
Apple better start getting those G5’s in their notebooks because their losing sales to people(like me) that want desktop replacements. Apple’s highend notebooks are woefully underpowered compared to the P4 3.4 ghz, ATI Radeon 9700 beasts that are being sold by Dell, pctorque, Alienware.
I think you should do some homework before you say macs are underpowered. They use a different processor, so you cannot compare them to 3ghz peecee’s.
And losing sales? How can they not sell an item to you if you had no intention of buying one in the first place?
Reasons to go for a Mac. They hardly ever crash, they are virtually silent, they control the manufacture so no more hardware conflicts, unlike my windows box which is crashing daily now grrr.
Hopefully next month I will be getting a Mac, if you wish I will write a review a month later to let you know the pro’s and cons of owning a Mac.

Two different markets if you ask me. Dell and Alienware offer big, heavy laptops that are supposed to be desktop replacements. The only worthwhile thing they offer over a conventional laptop is a gaming experience. Apple’s laptops are slim and elegant and they get the job done. What’s the point really of having one of those monstrous laptops anyway? Weren’t they made to be portable? I still have a 700Mhz laptop with a 4M graphics card and it does everything I need it to do. It will do most of what any average user needs it to do and be portable at the same time. Until they can fit that kind of power into a truly portable package it is not worth it in my opinion.
You and your buddies that have drank the Jobs kool-aid can keep on saying that, but nobody believes it. It’s all made in Taiwan.
You can take your “kool-aid”, along with you “M$” rubbish else where. How about all those idiots who still pay a premium for HP/Compaq when Dell is cheaper? why don’t you bash up on them? heck, why don’t you bash those simpletons who still buy their corporate PCs from HP/Compaq even though IBM and Dell offer a better product.

This comment is coming from a person who whines about paying $799 for an eMac? heck, you can’t afford and eMac and yet you want a laptop that COSTS even MORE! this is typical Wintel advocates at work, they whine that they can’t afford a Mac and yet their excuse is, that they would buy one if it were better. How does one spontaneously get more money OVERNIGHT on the basis of a peceived “better product”?
I have a eMac, running Adobe Creative Suite, MacOS 10.3.2, 1GIG of memory, Simcity 4, 4th Dimension Database, Office X, etc etc. and yet, I am quite able to get about doing my work. It is just as fast, from my “end user” stand point as the Compaq P4 corporate desktops I see on a regular basis.
I never said profit is not meaningful. I said percentage increase in profit is not meaningful. If you had a tiny profit last year, it is easy to have a big percentage increase in profit.
Too bad I have recently decided NOT to buy an Apple laptop. IBM will get my money in a weeks time since they have (IMO) a better product for a better price. Hello Thinkpad X41, goodbye over-priced buggy OS 10.3! Perhaps in the US they would have a more compelling case. Outside the US they are rip-off merchants.
The only worthwhile thing they offer over a conventional laptop is a gaming experience. Apple’s laptops are slim and elegant and they get the job done. What’s the point really of having one of those monstrous laptops anyway?
I’m not a little girl that has problems with 8 whole lbs. I want something I can take to the living room, to a friends, wherever. I don’t need some ultra-slim portable. I want power with portability. Why don’t you ask pctorque why they’re in business if there’s no demand for these notebooks. But thanks for the laugh by trying to convince me what notebook is best for my needs.
Kaiwanz-
You can take your “kool-aid”, along with you “M$” rubbish else where. How about all those idiots who still pay a premium for HP/Compaq when Dell is cheaper?
I guess you have a reading comprehension problem because I never brought up HP/Compaq.
This comment is coming from a person who whines about paying $799 for an eMac?
Once again, try reading sometime. It’s useful for some things. I never mentioned anything about emacs or having a problem with $799. You must be confusing me with someone else in one of your other mac advocacy posts.
To the both of you –
I just checked out the mac website to see what the prices are on their notebooks. It looks like their most powerful notebooks is the 17-inch powerbook. Pretty big screen, but only runs at 1440×900. Thank you, but I prefer my 1600×1200 UXGA screen. The processor is only a 1.33 ghz G4. No matter how you cut it, it’s woefully underpowered compared to my p4 3.2 ghz. I’m happy to see their offering the ATI 9600 Pro cards. That’s what I got, and its a very fast, very nice card. The kicker is that they want $3k for it. I paid $2100k for my Sager 5680 – P4 3.2 ghz, ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, ethernet, wireless, 1600×1200 UXGA screen, 1 gig of ram. Sorry, but for almost a thousand dollars left I get a much more powerful notebook.
I’ll now leave you guys to the regularly schedule programming of the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field show.
P.S. That 17 inch powerbook weighs in at 7 lbs. Not exactly an ultraportable either.
Before I checked out Sager, I went to see what kind of thinkpad offerings were out there. I have had a thinkpad for years and love it. Too bad the little trackpointer isn’t on my new notebook. They don’t really offer desktop replacements, but even their ultra-portables were WAY OVERPRICED. I couldn’t believe how much IBM was trying to pawn these things off for.
if apple comes out with a display less mac tower price 800 USD with enough power compare to average pc box. will you buy it? (serious question )
I have no idea. I’m usually not interested in $800 pcs. I usually go for higher-end stuff. I just bought a desktop replacement notebook as noted in my previous post and I’m not in the market for a desktop system at the moment. I’m more interested in OSX than Apple hardware anyway, even though the G5s look very nice.
“You can take your “kool-aid”, along with you “M$” rubbish else where. How about all those idiots who still pay a premium for HP/Compaq when Dell is cheaper?
I guess you have a reading comprehension problem because I never brought up HP/Compaq.
What a sad little boy you are. Read what I wrote in context with you claim that Apple is expensive in the price/performance, aka “bang for you buck” test. I simply pointed out that there are loads of OTHER computer manufacturers which are ship more than Apple and yet have products which have a worse performance/price ratio.
Take HP/Compaq vs. Dell for one example, why would would continue buying HP/Compaq going buy your rationale? using your logic, no one would buy HP/Compaq, and everyone would instantly buy Dell. The fact is, price/performance isn’t the only aspect a consumer takes into account when purchasing their computer.
Let me give you an example of “Joe and Jane average”, Joe Average in this case is a work collegue, is paid the going rate of around AUS$35,000 a year, for him, he sees nothing wrong with paying $2,200 for a computer, infact, he would rather spend that little bit extra now and be able to keep it for 3-4years without fear of it going out of date too quickly.
What makes things go out of date quickly? the operating system. When the operating system is developed in tandem with the hardware, the company, aka, Apple, understands the limitations and advantages of their hardware and thus able to taylor to meet those demands.
Compare that to Microsoft, however, which doesn’t have those constrants hence the reason you have that “upgrade treadmill” which we see. I am NOT slamming this, just giving a reason WHY the Mac hasn’t/doesn’t evolve at the same pace.
Heck, you can replace Apple with SUN, for example and have a look at the slow evolution of their workstation line. Their focus is more conservative than the PC world, their concentration is on stability, reliability and so forth, hence, there is a premium you pay for these.
As for my experience using an eMac, I’ve upgraded to 1GIG of memory from the standard 128MB and even after that, I’ve yet to see the finder crash, a kernel panic. The worse thing I’ve seen is Corel Graphics Suite keal over, however, from what I see, Corel has basically left the Mac market, and hence the reason why I moved to Adobe Creative Suite (which is an exceptionally good package IMHO).
Apple achieved a profit of $137 million which is a very poor return on assets. Apple could have made a greater return by simply buying bonds with their $4.8 billion cash reserves.
Apple is now capitalised at about one half of its 1984 value (adjusted for inflation).
A responsible Apple board would sell the company to IBM.
i have been using mac since 1987 and i told my wife(ex-PC user) that i was getting a dell laptop and she almost punched me. She doesn’t want to go back to windows. I was just playing but she told me that she would rather save $$$ and get a 12″ powerbook if i wanted. she makes me so happy!!!
you get what you pay for. my mac doesn’t crash, everything is easy to do and
no viruses. i just save $20 a month in order to save money for the next OS
version…as simple as that. I’d rather wait a little bit longer and get something
If people are getting ripped off by HP/Compaq then that’s their business and completely irrelevant to me.
What makes things go out of date quickly? the operating system. When the operating system is developed in tandem with the hardware, the company, aka, Apple, understands the limitations and advantages of their hardware and thus able to taylor to meet those demands.
Apple OS engineers don’t understand the G5 any better than MS OS engineers understand x86. They just have a smaller subset of peripheral hardware than MS does.
Compare that to Microsoft, however, which doesn’t have those constrants hence the reason you have that “upgrade treadmill” which we see. I am NOT slamming this, just giving a reason WHY the Mac hasn’t/doesn’t evolve at the same pace.
There is no “upgrade treadmill”. People buy a pc and it has XP installed it. XP will run fine on even the most modest new systems that people buy. People with older hardware will stick with 98 or linux or whatever, or will buy more memory. You’re confusing new apps that are memory/cpu hogs to the actual OS which doesn’t really change all that much. The time between the release of XP and Longhorn is going to be what, 6 years.
Anyway, you pretty much went off on a tangent. I never mentioned MS, and you didn’t address my response to you and the other guy, but I’m happy to discuss this with you.

With all of your ‘kool-aid’ comments, you don’t sound like someone who would ever seriously consider buying a Mac.
As someone who would and does buy Mac, I don’t feel the same urgent need for Apple to produce 17″ G5 notebooks. Hopefully whatever they produce will be well engineered.
The G5 will probably turn out to be a much better laptop chip than the Pentium series, or any of the coming 64-bit x86 chips, and we’ll probably see them this year. The reason is not just about clock speed, but power consumption and heat. You’ve dropped a lot of numbers when talking about your machine, but neglected to mention that your 3.2 runs at 1.6 GHz when you’re on battery. The 1.25 GHz G4 in a PowerBook would be seriously kicking your tail in that circumstance.
That may be why you so carefully used the phrase ‘desktop replacement’. Your machine works fine when tethered to a desk, and is portable; but put one on your lap and you’re gonna fry some eggs.
Not to dog your machine. I’m sure it’s great, but there are limitations and drawbacks also. These are engineering concerns taken into consideration when a machine is designed.
The reason I mention that is this new 90nm G5 is said to consume about 25Watts at 1.8GHz.
> While Intel continues to have problems with the power consumed by
> its 90nm ‘Prescott’ processor – 100W at around 3.2GHz – IBM’s own
> documentation claims the 90nm 970 eats 24.5W at 2GHz. By comparison,
> the 130nm 970, currently used by Apple in its Power Mac G5 desktop line,
> consumes 51W at 1.8GHz.
Sounds promising, right? But it was suggested at one site that Apple could release a 1.2 GHz G5 with even lower power requirements and less heat generated. I’m not saying they will, but it’s a valid choice to make when designing for a portable cramped enclosure.
>>you get what you pay for. my mac doesn’t crash, everything is easy to do and no viruses.
My PC with windows xp has never crashed yet in over than one year of use ( never reinstalled it ), everything is easy to do and no viruses, trojan, worm on it. So for 1/3 of the price of an Apple, I have gotten much more, sure keep your mac, I am definitly happy with my pc
“Take HP/Compaq vs. Dell for one example, why would would continue buying HP/Compaq going buy your rationale? using your logic, no one would buy HP/Compaq, and everyone would instantly buy Dell. If people are getting ripped off by HP/Compaq then that’s their business and completely irrelevant to me.
Why does it then magically become your business when Apple customers are apparently being “ripped off”, for me, I don’t consider myself being ripped off.
I would buy a PC without hessitation IF I could get the software I want running on the operating system I want to run, namely, a UNIX like such as FreeBSD or Linux. Since I can’t get a UNIX like operating system for the x86 based processor that allows me to use the applications I want, the only viable option for me is the Mac platform.
I have NO issues with the x86 architecture. If tomorrow all the software I wanted became available for FreeBSD (for example), I would instantly assemble a dual Opteron box with out the slightest bit of hessitation, that fact is, it won’t happen.
I think you`ve been rather lucky because I have XP Pro, with service pack 1 and patches installed, and I`ve had plenty of crashes – not hardware related or exotic software. XP is nothing special in the reliability stakes.
As for Apple I`m glad they made a profit but it wasn`t exactly large considering they are going through one of their better periods.
A lot of the Apple posters are still living in 1984. They seem to think that the Mac is still unique in the market place. I`ve been attached to non-wintel platforms, just like all you Mac posters, so I know how these types of communities distort reality. Today the Mac is just another personal computer that shares much of its functionality with other platforms – in most respects I can get similar performance for a lot less money. That`s what the general public know, and that`s why Macs don`t sell in huge numbers compared to x86 platforms.
For 700β¬ you have the equivalent of a 1600β¬ eMac, still have to add the screen, but I have already got one. I was a off, I thought that eMac were even more overpriced than that.
I used to sympathize with American car companies. Afterall.. they were made in “America” right?(yea.. I know.. I know..) I also used to like Apple computer. That was before that superbowl commercial. But there is something I’ve learded as I’ve grown older. Companies don’t have human emotions, they don’t *care* about anything, least of all me. They have no loyality. There is no reason to have loyality to them. So all you who feel you need to step up and defend a company for any other reason then a rational one, please stop. It’s a waste of human life fournicating with plastic and metal.
> everything is easy to do and no viruses, trojan, worm on >it.
While everything else is subjective I think the posters point that there are no “viruses, trojan[s], [or] worm[s]” for Mac OS X at all rather than they simply haven’t got any, which is obviously rather different than XP. There where less than 30 true viruses (not macro viruses for MS products) for the mac before Mac OS X, and I’m not sure if these will run under OS X anyway.
For me, I like the upgrade path with the x86 systems. If I was buying from scratch, the mac would be closer to the value/money of a pc and OSX does seem interesting. I usually upgrade my main computer every two years. I usually keep the older machine running, but I use it for parts too. The hard drive, ram, drives, monitor can all be used building the new system. For the price of a logicboard/cpu, case and possibly a new video card I can have a new machine without paying through the teeth. I don’t hate macs, I just think their kinda pricey. My friend told me it’s easy to upgrade his mac…..he just buys a new one.
If people weren’t using warez, or executing themself file attachment ( mydoom anyone ? ), XP would be “as secure” as mac os X.
It’s all about the person, not the plateform.
There are some security issues directly related to XP, I reconize, but I don’t expect a bug free OS like XP at all, the same can be said for any other OS, Mac OS X included.
I can install a brand new MS operating system on a six year old system manufactured by nearly anyone. I can install Linux on a ten year old system without issues either.
However I can’t install a brand new Apple operating system on a machine made by Apple themselves less than three years ago.
There must be a plan for success in there somewhere, but it totally escapes me.
If percentage gain in profits is so important it should be reflected in the price of the stock. As of this moment the price has dropped. In fact, it has remained in the $22-23 range for quite some time. So much for percentage figures without a good reference point.
“I can install a brand new MS operating system on a six year old system manufactured by nearly anyone.”
Funny, I can’t (P2/400) at w/omajor hw problems…
“I can install Linux on a ten year old system without issues either.”
Which distro? oh, that one,(sorry, a bit or sarc)… I have an old P150 and I can’t install any major modern distros… only what? Slackware? I don’t know… too much hassle, I gotta get to work…
“However I can’t install a brand new Apple operating system on a machine made by Apple themselves less than three years ago.”
Hmm, I have a G3/333 Lombard (1999) and it’s all up-to-date, works a lot better than I ever thought…
So, Whatever…
I’m happy Apple’s making, whatever percentage… it’s a great alternative WORKING platform. All the apps I require (‘cept som CAD/CAM, but that’s just a UNIX port thing) are here…
> However I can’t install a brand new Apple operating system on a machine
> made by Apple themselves less than three years ago.
I’ll just add my voice to the others who’ve called you on this. Both my Macs have been upgraded to Panther, one of which is a four year old G4 tower. Works great.
<comparison to wintel>I should have added that at work our four year old Micron laptops were just upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional for security reasons (insert joke here).
Aside from MS Word now crashing occassionally, the most noticeable difference is our hardware is apparantly no longer recognized/supported. There is no longer any power management, and the computers can no longer sleep.</comparison to wintel>
I love how the zealots think everyone should switch to their platform and become all hotheaded about things as exciting as a damn computer. It’s just a product – feel free to develop your personality and whole identity around it but don’t be surprised when everyone else just rolls their eyes and walks away.
No one really cares and no one is going to switch platforms if what they have is working perfectly for them regardless of your rants.
if you bother reading the comments, you will find that all the Pro Mac comments were maid for debunking the wintrolls’ comments which are of the form “Macs suck PCs rock.”
That’s what this thread was ‘supposed’ to be about… and, as usual, it turns into a Mac/PC thing…
Yeah, I’m a Mac zealot, but that’s NOT what this threads about.
Everyone’s too tied up with quarterly fiscal numbers… all I want is to take a good nap, wake up and do something creative… maybe I’ll go draw something
The big problem with this thread and its Zealots is that there is one side that is heavily uneducated. Thats generally the Wintel side. If you have a Wintel box and a fairly current Mac with OSX then go ahead and spill your opinions. If youre like the usual trolls that have never even seen or used OSX before then heres a cookie…now STFU.
Ive got 2 Linux servers at home, 2 XP PCs (one for wife and one for gaming rig), and a Powerbook Mac. I’ve used and continue to all platforms and I can say with full confidence that OSX blows the doors off XP. As does the hardware it runs on. For those crying about price….stop whining like 2 year olds. You DO get what you pay for. I really wish BMWs werent so expensive too. You dont see anyone crying to world that BMW needs to lower their prices because Kia has cars that drive on the same roads for 9 grand. Also on that subject, I’ve found over the years of x86 that its quite necessary to upgrade often. Like at least once every 12 to 24 months and definately with any new version of Windows. Well my experience with the Macs is that they just don’t need hardware upgrades. Maybe after 3 years it might be nice to step to the newer toys, but OSX tends to get faster and faster with every release on the same hardware (complete opposite with Windows)
Then there is the question of stability and security…..lets not even go there. Its no contest OSX wins hands down PERIOD.
Although the Sager 5680 is definitely a performance beast, the guys at PCTorque say that it has an average battery life of only 1-1.5 hours. You could install another battery in the expansion bay for another $135 bucks but that would barely get you through a single DVD movie!
Anybody have any comments on the battery life? How does this compare to Alienware laptops?
Don’t post if you don’t know what the hell your talking about OK.
A guy said that a 5 year old Mac can’t be upgraded to run Panther, WRONG.
Someone said Apple is going out of business, WRONG.
Sager is a NO NAME brand PC, I don’t know anyone who has heard of it let alone can spell its name so don’t compare no brand stuff to name brand stuff. Its like comparing an Acura NSX to a Grand National. Two totally different cars with different aspects to engineering an power.
Someone mentioned DDR for the eMac. Why? DDR for a machine that has a 133MHZ FSB?
The eMac also performs fine. It also does what no PC can do, it runs MacOSX.
Apple is profitable, PERIOD. There is no question that they are doing well.
I don’t see how this is on topic, but you are kidding right!? The most expensive part of any computer is the company’s logo. All the major components come from the same manufacturers, ie Wester Digital, Maxtor, Pioneer, nvidia, ATI, Kinston, Crutial, Corsair, etc.
Why should I pay more money for the same components just because the computer has an Apple sticker?
In an effort to get this back on topic, the reason Apple posted a profit is because they have done a good job at developing recurring revenue (annual Apple tax).
I wonder if any of you guys that fights over computers think on what jokes and unmaturness you show off? Really it’s about sad on ever site I goto with apple vs wutever you guys have to just prove how freaked you really are in the mind. Get over it! Some ppl loves apples for wut they are and some loves x86 for wut they are and some dun know wut the heck their even useing.
my 5 year old system works just fine, I’ve even heard of people using up to 10.2 on a 8600 which is about 8 years old.
10.2 panics when I try to install it on my blueberry iMac, I’m stuck with 10.1. π The OSX/G3 compatibility issue is well documented and a class action lawsuit has even been filed against Apple.
The battery life on the Sager definetely sucks, but it doesn’t matter to me. But this is a desktop replacement machine and is almost always plugged in. Alienware machines are almost the same as pctorque machines. The only difference that I know of is that the Alienware machines have upgradeable video cards(which you pay a hefty premium for), but its battery life is going to suck too. If you want the mobile you’re going to get the Pentium-M. Maybe AMD has a power-saving chip too, I’m not sure.
/Reasons to go for a Mac. They hardly ever crash, they are virtually silent, they control the manufacture so no more hardware conflicts, unlike my windows box which is crashing daily now grrr. //
Funny, my self-built PC, of top-of-the-line components doesn’t crash daily .. in fact, since installing XP Home 10 months ago, it’s crashed only when running a game in “Windows Me emulation” mode.
I bought my iMac in ’99 and it is running great. I had a Compaq Presario and
it was a nightmare. I paid $2k at the time and I gave it away because it was
always crashing and freezing and it got 3 viruses plus a lot more. This is
just my personal experience. I ended it up kicking it on the floor. I lost
two projects that cost me a week without getting any sleep. Maybe it was the
hardware but I do not trust Microsoft. At work is the same thing with the NTs.
We don’t have any problem with Solaris…it is rock stable.
I tried YDL 3.0 and it was very good too but I did not want it to deal with
dependencies. Maybe later I would like to try Slackware. I also worked with
Amigas and those were excellent comuters. The OS was marvelous.
I love to seat in front of my Mac…it is well design, beatiful and it works. I don’t mind using x86 computers, my problem is with Windows. Security issues, viruses and etc is just BS. I think Microsoft can do a lot better but
at this point they haven’t done. If you are a gamer or if you like to type letters, get a PC with Windows. I understand that. For seroius jobs, get a Mac.
There are so many ways to go from point A to point B. The difference is how
“10.2 panics when I try to install it on my blueberry iMac, I’m stuck with 10.1. π The OSX/G3 compatibility issue is well documented and a class action lawsuit has even been filed against Apple. ”
That doesn’t mean it’s not installable. There may be another problem to explain it. 10.3 runs fine on my original iMac.
And the class action was solely about the small number of features which were unsupported at the release of OS X. Most of those odler features have been brought back into the OS with later releases of OS X.
I use a Win XP box and a G4 Sawtooth/AGP/450mhz 768 megs of ram on both machines. I haven’t really upgraded either machine in a long time, 2-3+ years. I’m happy with both the way they are, but for some reason on my XP box Windows Update is broken >_< so I guess no more updates untill the next service pack release. On the other hand my Mac, which is… how old… I dunno… pretty old. Runs fine I don’t game on it so I still have the original ATI Radeon Mac Edition with no chipset fan. >_<
On another note I was running Mac OS X up to 10.1 on a 250mhz Wallstreet with like 384 megs of ram.
Windows isn’t that bad of a platform. Unlike Apple, the range of hardware available on PCS comes in many degrees of quality. There are instances where you don’t want to invest a LOT of money on machines that won’t be treated properly, yet there are times when you want to invest the money in high quality hardware and achieve good performance. I have used both Mac and PC now for a very long time, and I can say for sure that not every XP machine locks up, has viruses, or is insecure as quickly as I can say that not every OSX machine remains stable, is reliable, and fast. Both machines are platforms, each with their own set of issues. Considering how long Microsoft has kept compatbility with their older applications, and the degree to which they have supported a vast amount of hardware, I would have to say that it is a miracle they have successfully done as much as they have done and not totally imploded and in many respects I think Microsoft has accomplished many many many more engineering feats than Apple. Especially since Apple’s solution to problems tends to be jumping to new cpu architectures or utilizing source code from BSD to stablilize an otherwise outdated platform. I don’t buy all the MS hatred, they deserve a LOT more credit than any Mac zealot is ever willing to give them. If it weren’t for the competition of Microsoft, and the overpriced nature of Macs, having a GUI based desktop environment might have been something Apple would charge outrageous prices for until someone managed to clone it or produce it so average people could afford it. I’d say, sure Microsoft isn’t known for security and they constantly get bombarded by people who haven’t touched windows since 95 or 98, but it is a shame that people can’t realize how much effort it takes to keep a platform as old as windows alive for as long as it has been alive for. Giving up on old code, compatibility, and jumping to new hardware is easy. Apple took the easy way out.
“Also on that subject, I’ve found over the years of x86 that its quite necessary to upgrade often. Like at least once every 12 to 24 months and definately with any new version of Windows. Well my experience with the Macs is that they just don’t need hardware upgrades. Maybe after 3 years it might be nice to step to the newer toys, but OSX tends to get faster and faster with every release on the same hardware (complete opposite with Windows)”
At the moment I am running on hardware that up until recently was AT LEAST 3 years old, the only thing recent in my PC is a new graphics card that I bought on the spur because it was cheap, and the quality was very acceptable before then. I can do pretty much everything I want to do.
I’ve been using Windows 2000 since it came out and honestly I can say it is extremely solid. The only times it has crashed on me is when I do something seriously wrong which is usually me screwing around with things I shouldn’t (not simple things like settings, but programs that are alpha and tweaking speed settings) so even though I do all these things, if I didn’t I would have an extremely solid computer that has lasted me for just as long as your 3 years you quote for a Mac. The idea that PCs can’t last long is just a fallacy, they can as long as you don’t feel the need to upgrade. Even on my 800Mhz Duron, Knights of the Old Republic and yes, even the resource intensive Morrowind work fine.
Apple’s gonna die any day now?
(Yeah, just kidding. Hell, I even bought an iPod now!)
No, but it sounds like proof that Apple computers are too expensive. π
“Percentage increase in *revenue* is interesting. Percentage increase in profit isn’t.”
Ever heard of dividends?

>You and your buddies that have drank the Jobs kool-aid can keep on saying that, but nobody believes it. It’s all made in Taiwan.
Well, the G5 is made in Fishkill, New York. So, there. B-)
What I’d like to know is how much of that profit comes from PC sales, and how much comes from iPod sales.
“Ever heard of dividends?”

Kaiwanz-

(serious question )
if apple comes out with a display less mac tower price 800 USD with enough power compare to average pc box. will you buy it? (serious question )
I have no idea. I’m usually not interested in $800 pcs. I usually go for higher-end stuff. I just bought a desktop replacement notebook as noted in my previous post and I’m not in the market for a desktop system at the moment. I’m more interested in OSX than Apple hardware anyway, even though the G5s look very nice.
“You can take your “kool-aid”, along with you “M$” rubbish else where. How about all those idiots who still pay a premium for HP/Compaq when Dell is cheaper?

I’d rather wait a little bit longer and get something
that is going to last me forever.
i am glad for Apple. you guys rock!!!

If people are getting ripped off by HP/Compaq then that’s their business and completely irrelevant to me.

“goodbye over-priced buggy OS 10.3!”
Over-priced is relative to the buyer but take back your “buggy” words because it is not true.

The reason I mention that is this new 90nm G5 is said to consume about 25Watts at 1.8GHz.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/39/35057.html
> While Intel continues to have problems with the power consumed by
> its 90nm ‘Prescott’ processor – 100W at around 3.2GHz – IBM’s own

> the 130nm 970, currently used by Apple in its Power Mac G5 desktop line,

One third the price?
eMac: $799
your machine: $266.33
Excellent!
That really is outstanding value I can’t argue with.
It’s a waste of human life fournicating with plastic and metal.
what about the super bowl PEPSI comercial
and if you are wasting your life with a computer why are you on this web site?
What’s wrong with fournicating with plastic toys..?! Maybe you should give it a go some time… π
“and if you are wasting your life with a computer why are you on this web site?”
Whoosh!.. the sound of all that going right over your head…
> everything is easy to do and no viruses, trojan, worm on >it.
There are some security issues directly related to XP, I reconize, but I don’t expect a bug free OS like XP at all, the same can be said for any other OS, Mac OS X included.
but then they are a pack of strokers
well i guess apple is doing the right thing by avoiding getting caught up in the brutal pc industry’s price only differentiation point.
i still think they need to take more share though.
I can install a brand new MS operating system on a six year old system manufactured by nearly anyone. I can install Linux on a ten year old system without issues either.
However I can’t install a brand new Apple operating system on a machine made by Apple themselves less than three years ago.
There must be a plan for success in there somewhere, but it totally escapes me.
my 5 year old system works just fine, I’ve even heard of people using up to 10.2 on a 8600 which is about 8 years old.
If percentage gain in profits is so important it should be reflected in the price of the stock. As of this moment the price has dropped. In fact, it has remained in the $22-23 range for quite some time. So much for percentage figures without a good reference point.
“Where’s the beef?”
However I can’t install a brand new Apple operating system on a machine made by Apple themselves less than three years ago.>>
Really?
Because right now I’m running 10.3 on a vintage 2001 iBook. Installed without a hitch and boots quickly (45 secs).
Upstairs I’ve got 10.3.2 on a 1999 iMac 350 and it also boots quickly (55 secs) and runs acceptably.
1999 … that was 5 years ago.
Please tell us the 3 year old Apple machine that you cannot install 10.3 on. Specs, too, please.
Or are you just an ignorant troll talking out of your rectal tract?
Yes, the eMac is $800.00… However, it uses SDRAM? Please! No DDR, no way! The eMac is WAY underpowered to even consider.
I love how the zealots think everyone should switch to their platform and become all hotheaded about things as exciting as a damn computer. It’s just a product – feel free to develop your personality and whole identity around it but don’t be surprised when everyone else just rolls their eyes and walks away.
No one really cares and no one is going to switch platforms if what they have is working perfectly for them regardless of your rants.
if you bother reading the comments, you will find that all the Pro Mac comments were maid for debunking the wintrolls’ comments which are of the form “Macs suck PCs rock.”
who sounds like the zealot again?
“You and your buddies that have drank the Jobs kool-aid can keep on saying that, but nobody believes it. It’s all made in Taiwan.”
Dah, it’s all made in Taiwan these days,,,,Abit mobos, biostar………what hp isn’t different,,,,,they us malay, singapore..etc
Ain’t is amazing…
“Apple Annual Profits Soar 552%”
That’s what this thread was ‘supposed’ to be about… and, as usual, it turns into a Mac/PC thing…
Yeah, I’m a Mac zealot, but that’s NOT what this threads about.
Everyone’s too tied up with quarterly fiscal numbers… all I want is to take a good nap, wake up and do something creative… maybe I’ll go draw something

Apple goes out of business, isn’t it? π
Apple loses market share, isn’t in?
Thank you, guys! π
More you say bad about Apple, more it is great!
And my stock profits better! AHAHAHAH!!! π
PS Tomorrow I order my new iBook G4 12″.

Not sure what youre looking at. On your posted link I see 2 2 for 1 splits. One in 87 and another in 00.
We love ya Apple!
I’d buy an apple if I could get a stable job in this economy.

Hogwash, your reasons.
The difference is how
you get there.

“I lost two projects that cost me a week without getting any sleep.” One word: backup.
after that incident i stopped trusting computers. but i have never had any problem with my Mac.
but you are right.
