ha ha first post and yay!
Rats a rot rov rupdates!
In all seriousness, Apple’s doing a lot of work in the background there and should be commended.
…be very careful. My SGI LCD screen worked fine in 10.1.2, but when I installed 10.1.3, something happened to the refresh rate of the screen and it stopped working in OS X. I had to boot off of an OS 9 CD and delete my WindowServer preferences file in order to restore order to my Mac. And even now, all my LCD’s colors are all washed out. So, just proceed with caution.
the crstals keep thei orientation until a diffrent charge hits them, are you sure you diagnosed the problem correctly?
while it’s true that LCD does not refresh like a CRT, I think the message by Henry was to be careful since the 10.1.3 update can render your system unusable if you have some type of LCD.
maybe the problem was just a default setting in the config file, or some updated driver, but none-the-less the problem appeared with the update. Just be cautious
How does a cautious updating procedure look like?
I’d say you install the patch, reboot and that’s it – either it worked out or not…. pretty much like the uncautious way to do it… 😉
well, one way to be more cautious would be aware that such thing can happen, and have a bootable cd on the ready. Being aware helps reduce the time you will scream and run in circle while being shocked, and the cd will help reboot the system to delete your WindowServer preferences
I have never had problems with an update (well, except 10.1.0 broke some java apps…), but is there any way to roll back an update, like in Windows? In 2k and XP, you can uninstall service packs.. wondering if there is the same mechanism in OSX> If not, it needs to be there.
Or instead of using the CD, just boot into single user mode and use the command line to manually delete the com.apple.windowserver.plist file, if I remember the name right.
Out of curiosity, what SGI LCD panel do you have? 1600SW or a different one?
Some improved drivers… Is this really a new version worth updating to or are is something else new making it worth the upgrade for those without the listed hardware?
I updated last night and have had no problems whatsover, KDS Radius S-3F LCD included. In fact, I’ve found all my Carbon applications run noticeably better even if they’re not mind-boggling fast.
Thanks to Apple again for the hard work!
🙂
big deal my $#@*&^ CD-burner (sony supressa) still doesn’t work
Yes, I guess I should have explained it better. My LCD is digital, but doesn’t use the same kind of digital video plug that my Mac uses (ADC), so I have to use the analog VGA jack and a VGA->Digital convertor box. That convertor box only accepts 60Hz video signal, for some reason. So, if you use an LCD that uses a VGA conversion thing, just be aware. 8)
When I ran the update it locked up the WindowServer right before it was finished binding. When I recoverd my desktop I discoverd that Carbon apps wheren’t responding. I restarted and still faced the same problem. Using my full 10.1 disk (made from an update disk) I managed to recover the system by doing a minimal install and used the 10.1->10.1.3 combined update. This worked perfectly.
I noticed that the update also wiped out my sendmail conf file. I was unable to send anything from Mail.app (using my mac as the smtp server) until I made a few changes.
Be careful with this update!
the update worked fine on my 800DP G4 tower. Woo hoo!
I have had trouble getting Mail to download messages from the ISP POP3 server, I’v tried everything and have had to delete it because it just won’t get mail.
Where do I find a download for Mail.app?
