There is a new review of SkyOS 5.0, complete with a number of screenshots. The review can be found at the new Sky System website. In other SkyOS news, the ISS (Integrated Sound System) is progressing quickly, and Robert has completed and implemented drivers for both the Ensoniq/Creative ES1371 sound cards and VIA vt82xx / AC’97 chipset.
Bravo to the SkyOS team. This OS is getting better and better with every release. I think it actually has a chance to get up there with BeOS and maybe become a real competitor with the “big” OS’s (*nix, windows, MacOS).
This guy seems to be fairly new to computers, or perhaps he’s just ignorant.
He seems to think that having an application folder namned ‘programs’ is confusing.
I don’t really get his comment about hard coded vs dynamic shell. and oh “The shells “$>” can be edited in the registry to read anything really e.g. “SkySHELL>”” fabulous!
And as far as I know, SkyOS doesn’t have HW OpenGL yet (correct me if I’m wrong). He doesn’t seem to know that HW accelerated graphics isn’t just 3D.
He also assumes that every OS has a registry. While most OSs have a certain place where it stores settings, I wouldn’t really call it a registry like the one in Windows.
Also, without further investigation he claims that Bosch will remove the need to dual boot. For most people it won’t since it’s dog slow.
Urgh. Perhaps it’s a good review for the avarage joe.
It read more like an advertisement. I for one really didn’t like it (the review, not the OS).
the review layout is all fucked up somehow. just doesn’t renders right. text is missaligned, changes sizes at will, etc.
The review itself isn’t very interesting (its like, and as any good os, you can see tasks in skyos ! no, seriously ? yes, in the review, it is;)
Not really the best review ever – but skyos is cool.
It’s on a SkyOS fanboy site that doesn’t make for a balanced review does it?
That’s akin to MS reviewing Windows themselves!
If you wanna call this a feature then fair enough but review? pff..
If you have such a problem with OSNews, then why are you here? Why don’t you gather the resources necessary to start your own online operating system news site and do what you want with it.
I’d just like to thank Eugenia and Adam for all the hard work they put in every single day here. Its quite admirable.
I wouldn’t call it a review exactly. More like an overview. I still thought it was interesting though. It’s more in-depth than anything else I’ve read about SkyOS thus far. It gives a lot of screenshots of parts of SkyOS I’ve never seen, too.
Rain: He just meant that “//boot/programs” might be confusing for people migrating from Windows. And the key word in the statement about Bochs is “essentially.” It’s true that it would be very slow, but it is possible to run Windows.
“I’d just like to thank Eugenia and Adam for all the hard work they put in every single day here. Its quite admirable.”
I’d like to thank them too. Thanks ya’ll from down here in georgia.
Yes, I’m sure that Eugenia is rolling around on a bed piled high to the ceiling with money in her 15 room mansion.
Or maybe, those ads are to offset the cost of things like bandwidth.
How much do you think it costs them to run this site? No, that’s not a rhetorical question. I’d like to see how much you really think it costs. In addition to that, how much money do you think they make off of the ads on their site?
And then there is always the eternal question:
If you harbor such animosity towards Eugenia and OSNews, then why are you even here? Is it simply so that you can continue complaining about “the man” (who I guess you believe is Eugenia) and “big brother”?
This site is owned and operated by Eugenia. She can do whatever she wants in regards to moderation. You can be dissatisfied with it. But if you are so dissatisfied with it that it brings you to the level of disgust and hatred at which you currently seem to be mired at, why don’t you simply not visit OSNews anymore?
Right now, you’re just wasting bandwidth.
Hey Jane: Type this out 1000 times, “I am a troll, I’m only in it for the controversy and flames. I should be banned.” Then go crawl back under your bridge. As Kelly said, your’re just wasting bandwidth.
Has anyone actually used skyOS? They way it is getting developed and it seems with very less testing, how stable will it be for real world scenario? Or is it just meant to be a browser OS or mp3 OS?

We currently have over 100 beta testers who actively test SkyOS and provide us with feedback. The writer of the review is one of them.
it is the job of dissenters to say something MEANINGFUL to keep free speech.
also free speech is only applicaple to the govt. they cant stop you from saying something, but you seem to have the rather silly idea that, just because you can say something, an audience is gauranteed.
so reread the 1st amendment, read some modern political writings, and get the hell over it. you just dont have anything interesting to say.
If people are going to whine and complain about an OS not being mature enough yet, why even check out an OS hobbiest website? SkyOS is reported here BECAUSE it isn’t mature yet.
“This b**ch acts with impunity. It is the job of those that believe in free speech to be dissenters, rather than just walk away and allow censorship to continue.”
You are an idiot, Jane. This is a privately owned site, and when you post here, it says at the bottom of the page that you agree to certain terms, which include the possibility of being moderated. Your right to free speech is not guaranteed here anymore than it would be if you were standing in Eugenia’s living room.
I am just curious what the file system hierarchy looks like in SkyOS?
I really think they should change those “rectangular” push buttons into something more eye candy like, something that will match the task bar, panel. Rectangular is ok but the colors are all strange. This applies to the checkboxes too.
Is this one of those IE-only pages?
Is this one of those IE-only pages?
No, it’s just very badly written.
does it support Nforce ethernet?

The window title bars are being worked on, they’ll try to match the taskbar.
does it support Nforce ethernet?
Take a look here:
http://www.skyos.org/hardware.php
In the beta versions for 5.0, there are no network drivers. They do plan on including some in the betas before the final 5.0 release. I’m not sure they’ve commented on what network cards will be the best supported.

The guy who wrote the article needs to get his ducks in a row. He sounds like a newbie. Can anybody tell me how to access the “Windows and Linux style registry” in Linux. I thought Linux used text files in /etc now after 5 years I found out about the registry. Can anyone show me were it is?
Well.. This “review” was well intentioned, and written by someone who obviously isn’t a skilled reviewer.
But I think he deserves acknowledgement for doing it, and giving it a good go.
I am glad to see SkyOS continuing to progress, and to add more and more functionality.
I don’t think I’ll even use it myself as daily driver. But, I’ll probably buy a copy to support the effort and play with it. It does seem like it’s going to be a nice OS when it’s complete.
I’m rooting more for the ReactOS team, as that has the ability to run more of the Application I already own, and am used to.
What makes an OS useful, is not the OS itself. But the Apps it can run.
Once SkyOS is feature complete, I look forward to the Apps that will be written for it. That will determine for me, if it’s a good OS or not.
On SkyOS: what an interesting development. Coinicidentally (or maybe not) after finally getting the PowerMac of my dreams (2-brain 1.25GHz G4, now running Panther) I stumbled on OS News and started keeping up, It’s interesting as h3ll to see these so-called “small hobbyist” OSs that have a very cool and slick UI and a serious attitude. I find myself wondering why MS hasn’t tried to stop ReactOS yet, and SkyOS has ‘cool’ nailed absolutely. Cost? $30 is a bargain for a decent OS, this should be self-evident. Last time I priced Windows is was back in the 98 era and that was retailing at more than $120-$130. I imagine more now.
OS News: I love this site. I never thought I’d find this sort of stuff interesting but I do. You sure don’t find it out by reading the regular press. There, you’d think that Win was the only game in town and OS X was this niche boutique product. There’s a lot of innovation and activity going on, and all of a sudden I’m back in the 80’s when there were lots of ways to do things competing and there’s interesting ways to do just about everything.
Moderation: In a forum such as this, is proper. Someone said that moderation is an inexact term for what goes on here. No, it’s completely proper. There are terms of use, and nobody’s forcing me to post this message, and with all the contention in the world today, I like a site where I can come and watch a respectful chat. Not every discussion forum needs dissenters; lack of dissent does not necessarily mean that a discussion is unhealthy.
Moreover, most fora simply delete messages. Moderation-down is a real innovation. I frequently check the modded-down comments to see what didn’t pass for good discussion; I don’t always agree, but I don’t see abuse either. The moderation here is fine and effective, and shouldn’t change. Compliments.

I thought Linux used text files in /etc now after 5 years I found out about the registry.
Its called Gconf you can access it in Gnome by clickling on on the little foot.
Okay the above was a slight joke, but Gconf is sort of registriesh.

other than the interface they are miles apart
Sky OS seems like it is coming along nicely. It looks like it soon will be the perfect OS for web terminals, computer labs, and others. Bravo. I’ll be first in like to try out the shipping version.
And as a reminder to fellow posters, Don’t feed the trolls. They’re more likely to go away if you ignore them.
